    340 Head Bolt Question

    Do any of the head bolts go into water jackets on a small block 340 engine?

    no , that is a chevy thing , just the exhaust studs on the ends of the heads

    As I recall there is one on each side that does. I believe the manual says to put sealant on that bolt too. But it's been a long time.  I do remember 1 long bolt on a 340 head bolt leaking water, it was into the valve cover

    How critical is it that sealant be applied to the bolt?

    Some leak and some dont.  I have seen them leak after doing a valve job and re installing the heads. That's where I read it in the manual.  My friend found water in his oil one time after a rebuild and it was the same head bolt.

    Mine are already tightened.  Is it too late to run that center (long) bolt out and put sealer on it?

    no it's not to late. And I would do it. I sure wish some small  block guys would chime in for you. But I am pretty sure of this

    yes, you can remove it and apply some good rtv, you should have no further issues.
    just stuff the threads good.

    No small or big block mopar head bolts bolts hit water. They are all blind holes. Especially with small blocks, the holes should be fully bottom tapped and blown clean, and the bolt threads should be chased. If the block or heads have been milled, make sure teh bolts are not bottoming out in the holes as the depth can vary hole to hole by a bit. Start them by hand, lubing the threads with straight 30W oil, and torque evenly and smoothly in 3 increments to the spec (95lbs?). The last pull should turn the bolt more than 90° and should be done smoothly to the correct torque.
