Restoration - Jay Leno's 1931 Duesenberg Model J
« on: September 09, 2009 - 02:07:03 PM »
FYI - Not sure how many of you caught last night on DIY Network the half-dozen or so 30 min segments featuring Jay Leno's 1931 Duesenberg Model J, but I am sure it will be televised again on that same channel in the near future. The show is about Jay Leno wanting to restore yet ANOTHER Duesenberg, he has 6 or 7 already, pretty interesting, must cost a fortune to tear that thing down to the bare metal and the amount of labor involved.

I think I caught that episode :dunno: I watched something on dish network Discovery HD channel. The episode I watched he found it in a garage near burbank and he decided to do a basic resto, not a rotisserie. Leno brought out a bunch of his steam cars and drove em around. I wish I had just 1% of his car collection to play with  :droolingbounce:

yeah, I watched the whole thing.  I was impressed by the replacement wood (ash) process, and yes, the cost had to have been exorbitant.  But you can tell Leno views this as kind of a "preserving history" type of project, where money is not a concern compared to the "importance" of saving these rare cars.  They really do make an impression once on the road, but man, the chassis alone is over 4,000 lbs?   Incredible.

Is that the car he was accused of steeling?  He...along with a couple other guys...were sued a year ago for taking possesion of a Duesenberg under less than ideal circumstances.

What an amazing car. What's really amazing is the technology. The fact that the car was built in the late 1920's with double overhead cam and 4 valves per cylinder and then a turbo to boot giving the car over 300 HP. I love his cars and garage!!
