Oil Pan Size

How large, in dimensions, can I run on a 440 block in a 71 Challenger?  Thanks!  I will not know what the dimensions of the pan (in question) are until tomorrow at the earliest.  Thanks!

no really sure what you are asking , I custom built a 12 qt pan in my duster with trap doors etc
 you can go to a deep pan depending on ground clearance & road conditions where you are , there are wider circle track pans too

Thanks CP!  I guess I am not really sure what I am asking either.  On Tuesday, I am supposed to see a buddy that has an oil pan he said he would give me.  He cannot tell if it is a 7,8, or 9 qt pan.  He just knows that it is a Miloden Center Sump pan for a mopar 440.  I just wanted to know if there were any dimensions that I should look for or stay away from.  I think that the ground clearance is probably going to be the only thing that may get in the way, and that could be very bad.  I wonder, is there a rule of thumb that should be followed on ground clearance?  Thanks!

Personally I  prefer to go wie rather than deep with an oilpan but the roads are rough here

If you get a deep pan you will eventually scrape a hole in it hitting RR tracks or rocks or road debris etc. Listen to Chryco and get a wide one instead of a deep one. I run a Milodon 7 quart thay I cut an inch out of the sump and welded back together. A little deeper than a hemi oil pan.

Thanks for the help so far...Since I do not have a stock pan to compare depth to and not quite ready to set the engine in to see how it will fit, I still need some help here.  I was finally able to get over to get the pan.  It is 7.75" from block to bottom of pan once installed.  Is this pretty deep?  Here is a pic.

That's a deep one. If you put in your engine, you will notice that it hangs way below the k-frame. Maybe someone here has that pan and can take a picture of theirs for you. I don't run a deep pan. Deep pans are not Power Tour friendly.

Looks like the stock 5 qt is 5.25" deep.  Summit's website is useful for more than just ordering parts.

It's been said lots of time before but I will repeat it .......... run a 6qt Hemi pan, 3/8" pickup, high pressure pump and a stock windage tray. I have this setup in my 451 which is the stock 440 stroke and is for use of a stock bottom end setup. Big stroke stuff I am unsure what to use.

How do I know what size pan I should use?  Engine is going to be somewhere in the ball park of 493"-517" using a 440 block.  RPM's should never see more than 6500.  Is there a pan by Miloden or someone that you all would recommend?

I just use a factory 6pk / hemi 6 qt pan set up. I shift at 6500 to. The 402 pan didnt hold enough oil for my application.  All works good now with windage tray and baffle controls to. The 402 pan had all that as well, but not enough oil volume
