Engine oil with zinc
« on: September 11, 2009 - 12:42:56 PM »
I have been looking for engine oil that still has zinc in it. I was told to get diesel oil with either a CH or CI rating, not the CJ rating. I was told I could by it at WalMart. I have looked at several Walmarts and all their oils are either SM or CJ.
Where can I find oil with the CH or CI ratings for my 383 and 340? What brands do I look for?
I would prefer to not have to use an additive if I can get oil with zinc in it.
Thanks in advance.

around here 15-w40 Agricultiral oil is still rated SJ or SL which has the higher Zinc content , the stupid part is that it is $8.25 / gallon
 the other solution is to use a Zinc additive with any oil , www.cam-sheild.com sells a product with extrmemly high zinc content

My concern with the additive is I am not convinced how well the additive will mix into the oil. Also will additive "fall out" of the oil if the car sits? What is the cost of using the additive?

Wal-Mart should still have Mobil Delvac 1300 15-40w it is CI-4 Plus.

It's in a black gallon container about $11.97.....

If not use a good quality oil & some ZDDP additive..

I use 15W-40 Diesel oil. Virtually any brand israted SJ or SL. If you don't run the car below 40-50*F then it is ok.

I use Amsoil 10-40W for the old school vehicles. It has the CI-4 plus rating for the zinc. I believe Royal Purple does the same. It depends on if you want to spring for synthetic oil, or if you are looking for something cheaper along the lines of conventional oil.

My uncle uses Castrol 40wt in his race engines when the temp is not a factor and Castrol Tection Extra 15W40 if temps get a little cooler (he's in south Alabama so temps are a bit warmer) He just recently bought a lot of it at a bankrupt parts store auction and will make you a deal on the stuff if you are near him. The Tection is loaded with zinc (it's the earlier spec) he bought it just because he knew it was high zinc content oil and its getting difficult to get.
Below is from a Castrol rep response.
"HD 30 has relatively high level of Zinc and also has a treat of
Molybdenum. I would not expect cam issues with this product unless valve
spring pressures are so high that a higher viscosity grade is needed.
Syntec 5W-50 has lower Zinc level than HD 30 and slightly lower Moly
level and is more typical of a current GF-4 product.

Assuming that an API SG oil was fully backwards compatible with OEM
muscle cars and mild to moderate high performance after-market engine
work, and, if a "typical" SG PCO oil is assumed to have a Zinc level of
0.10 to 0.12 weight percent; then, the following Castrol products have a
Zinc level that is HIGHER than 0.12 weight percent:

* GTX 20W-50 (SL,SM) (also has a Moly treat)
* Castrol GTX Diesel 15W-40 (CI4,CH4,CG4,CF4,CF,SL)
* Castrol GTX High Mileage 20W-50 (SL,SM)
* Castrol HD 30 (SL,SM)
* Castrol HD 40 (SL,SM)
* Castrol Syntec Blend Truck 15W-40
(CI4,CH4,CG4,CF4,CF,SL)(Semi-synthetic)
* Castrol Tection Extra 15W-40 (CI4Plus, CI4,CH4,CG4,CF4,SL)
* Castrol Hypuron S 15W-40 (CI4Plus,CH4,CG4,SL)(Semi-synthetic)

Note that HD 30, HD 40, and GTX High Mileage also have a Molybdenum
treat which offers friction modification on top of the protective Zinc
film."

Mobile racing oil has zinc in it.

You can also just put a can of STP in with each oil change, as it has zinc in it as well.

This is a problem that we should all be aware of. (Maybe there should be a sticky about it). They have changed the formulation of todays oils to work for newer engines, and as a result have stopped adding zinc and other materials which are required by older engines. Without these materials, our old engines will wear out much quicker than normal. Much like the problems caused by taking the lead out of gasoline. It should be noted, however, that too much zinc will also cause wear, so dont go crazy with additives. One can of STP when having an oil change should be enough to take care of the problem.

I'm currently using the VR=1 as well. I got it locally for $4/quart.

Is there a particular type of STP that I should look for?
