this is what i use on a 555 lift solid lifter flat tappet cam..seems to work good,,lobes look good..

HUG 3690

EXTREME PRESSURE OIL ADDITIVE

1 PINT - SAVE THOSE FLAT TAPPET CAM LOBES!

$7.50

Over the past 10 years or so all cam manufacturers have seen an increase in flat tappet cam failures, particularly in the high performance arena. We have spent close to a year researching oils and additives to try and find a product that could eliminate this problem. We have found it! Hughes Engines Extreme Pressure Lubricant is a state of the art additive package that is compatible with standard (mineral based) oils or synthetics. To complement this highly specialized additive package a proven friction modifier, Micron Moly® is further blended into the oil treatment. Micron Moly® is a liquid soluble type of moly that plates to the metal surfaces of the engine. Once plated, the moly forms a long lasting lubricant film which prevents the metal surfaces from coming into contact with each other. By preventing metal to metal contact, damaging frictional wear is eliminated, which leads to less downtime and longer engine life. This additive should be used with all flat tappet camshafts. We suggest using this with your break-in oil and at every oil change. One pint will treat up to 5 quarts of oil.

To order a case of 12 pints at a discounted price order p/n 3690C

Larger orders of 72 pints or more will receive even greater discounts and must be ordered by phone..

Soluble molybdenum carbamate  integrates into your base oil and cannot be filtered out by the oil filter like many other after market additives do.
Why do we sell this particular Extreme Pressure Lube? Simple. Our first priority is to give our cams long life and this product does just that. We are happy to share this technology with others who have flat tappet cams who have had to struggle with this same issue.

Soluble Molybdenum carbamate has been used for 50 years or more in the industrial and H.D. trucking industry. We are offering this product as an oil additive. Hughes Engines Extreme Pressure Oil additive is recommended specifically for flat tappet camshafts in all applications. It can be added to any oil, good or crap. It will not affect catalytic converters. Yes, you can use it with roller cams, too! It is super slippery (slick) so if your rocker, pushrod tips and wrist pins live longer, don't be surprised. With products like this you can expect manufacturer claims of, better mileage, improved fuel mileage and reduced oil consumption, stops global warming, helps you lose weight etc...... All of that is possible, I suppose, but we know it will protect your cam & lifters. That is why we use it and recommend it.

From the research I have done oil formulas are very volitile and were never meant to have supplements added to them.
Newer oils have far more detergents which occupy the same critical wear areas in an engine that the ZDDP is suppose to coat. Oil companies invest a lot of time and money creating the right makeup for a specific oil. Using a supplement changes the chemical makeup of the oil and may not interact well with other ingredients being used.
Oils like VR-1, Joe Gibbs, and Brad Penn, etc have all been specifically formulated for flat tappet camshafts.

An additive with a regular oil may be fine but I don't want to take any chances.

Logical advice, this is the way I lean towards. It's the safe bet.
With all these additives I'm kinda left wondering which ones are " snake oil salesman"  :-\

This is a subject that has been beat to death over the last few years. After wiping a lobe on a motor this past year while running parts store house brand oil and consequently having to rebuild, I'll confirm it's a legitimate concern. I was running the comp cams break-in additive prior to my last oil change before wiping the lobe.

VR1 is a good choice, but hard to find on the shelf in 10W30. 20W50 is a little thick if you run your car in cold weather. Napa can get the 10W30 if you ask. Valvoline also has their off highway use racing oil with even more zinc. It's pricey though, and you probably won't find it on the shelf anywhere. Expect to pay about $9/qt.

I've started running Brad Penn Grade 1.  I can get it for 7 bucks a quart off Amazon.com. Since the wife is a shop-a-holic "Prime" member, I get free shipping.

I heard that by the end of 2012 zinc (in any amount) will no longer be allowed in motor oil.  Can anyone confirm this?  Will this affect the specialty oils mentioned above?

I heard similar rumors .
Z ALT was tracking the gov regulations going forward , I think this is where I heard about it .
Z Alt should still be available with the right formula for our old cars .

I assume the reason for eliminating the zinc compound is due to problems with the catalytic converters?  :dunno:

this is another reason why i will continue adding it myself,,i sleep better at night knowing i have the proper additives in my oil to make it live by not being sold out to the corp/politicians $$$$$$$$$ policys that dont care about the enthusiast's needs,,no matter what the reason....................if i buy a case of hughes add, i should be good for the next 10 years..

In light of what appears to be a constantly moving target I was hoping for some updated guidance.  Is it everyones understanding that ANY oil with api service classes SM or SN has significantly reduced zinc/phosphate?  I ask because I notice several oils display the SM symbol yet also indicate they are compatible with CI-4 or CI-4 plus, which I have read indicate increased zinc content.  I've also read certain viscosity grades may have exemption...  I'm somewhere in the middle of the learning curve on this complicated subject so if anyone can help clarify this it would be great!  Ultimately, is there any off the shelf oil with sufficient zinc content?
