Will this axle seal work?
« on: September 12, 2009 - 06:53:43 AM »
I got this at the Napa store. It was made in AMERICA!!!
The outer diameter is the same.
The outer thickness is the same.
The inner diameter on the new one is 1.500'' and the old seal is about 1.555'', I figure that the old seal is stretched from 40  years of use, so I think this is OK (?).....  The axle measures 1.560'', so I think the ID of the new seal is good.
Here's the rub, as you can see in the picture the new seal has a more shallow '' Seal Depth '' (Old seal depth=.490,  New seal depth=.240''), I think this should be OK since it seal is closer to the collar. Do you guys see any problem with this???
I appreciate you opinions.

I just installed that exact seal yesterday. Slipped it over the axle shaft b4 installation and it fit nicely. Drove it in with a big wooden dowel. (was an old wooden baseball bat that I squared off with a chop saw :grinyes:)

How did you come up with that PN, I think it should be 8695S for the inner seal.

If it was mine I'd like to have the maximum seal contact area possible.  You really don't want to have to pull it apart and do it again if it starts leaking.

Apparently according to some cross reference book that my parts guy had, the 8695S National seal is the same as that SKF seal. As you can tell though, it is not really identical, but inner and out bores matched up so I installed it.

Enter the PN here:

http://www.21cgt.com/FMWebCatalog/default.htm

Maybe that page doesn't work with Firefox. When I entered the PN it just went blank.

Local parts store can get them, just ask for National.

If not, RockAuto has them.

I think I'm going to return my seals and try to find some that are closer the the stock ones.......
These look like they should work fine, I can't understand why Chryco's failed.
