Oil burning on hotrodded engine
« on: September 12, 2009 - 10:59:45 PM »
Ok, you guys have been great helping me out with my other problems like coolant in the exhaust, overheating, etc. I finally got the beast on the road, and drove it for about 5 miles.

First the good, the power available is unbelievable  I've never driven a machine like that before. I barely cracked the throttle the whole trip, and every time I did, the car shot forward like it was fired out of a cannon. It has heavy duty springs and torsion bars all around, and you feel every pebble  :). With the gear cam drive and the TTI mufflers, the thing sounds like a panzer tank.

Now for the bad. The exhaust isn't obviously blue directly coming out of the pipes, but when it forms a cloud you can see a faint blue tinge. Revving the engine produces a little more blue.

The engine is a 340 rebuilt with a stroker kit, ported, roller valve train, all the goodies, by a guy who has done engines (but not necessarily 340s) for 20 years, and has since retired. The engine was then dynoed in 2006, and produced about 380 horsepower. From 2006 to last month, it basically sat in my car while I did the other work. I'd turn the crank over by hand once a week.

The guy who dynoed it does mopar race engines all the time, and I presume he would have noticed if it burned oil?

Is it possible this could be a breakin issue and get better over time? Is there something I could have screwed up putting the engine in? Is letting it sit for 3 years, turning over once a week, the cause?

Yes, one of the rocker covers has a filter cap on it and the other has a pcv valve with hose going to the carb.

One other thing: when I took the headers off looking for water leaks, in 3 of the exhaust ports there was an oily black substance on part of the inside of the port.

when the engine was stored for later use, was in conserved in any way?  I had a similar problem once and it took about 15/20 miles to before all greasy stuff inside the motor cooked out and the smoking stopped.

No, the only thing I did to it was turn the engine once a week.

My first thought would be to keep an eye on the oil level, but get a couple hundred miles on it first.

Your intake gasket could be leaking at some of the ports and allowing small amounts to get into the combustion system. Usually it will happen when you shave heads and deck blocks where the machining angles are off slightly.  So gasket sealant is an issues when assembling. Or maybe even loose guides.

Back in the day, some people left the valve seals off of the exhaust valve or just used a small rubber o ring so the valve would be sure to get oil. This would always end up with light amounts of blue exhaust smoke

What carb are you running? I had the same problem with a 340 when I was running a Demon. Never could get it to behave (too much fuel at idle) as it was washing the cylinder walls with gas and rings couldn't seat.
Once I got rid of that carb the smoke went away and the engine is now running great.

I'm running an Edelbrock 1411 750 CFM "Performer" carb. It was tuned and jetted by the dyno guy.

I was worried that the carb would need to be rebuilt again after sitting around for 3 years (I kept it wrapped in plastic) but it appears to be working fine.

My two pennies here.   :2cents:

I really think 5 miles of driving is too soon to get worried. I would keep driving it and see if things get better. After 5 miles, the oil won't even be warmed up yet.

I'm going to take your advice and put at least 100 miles on it and see how it goes. So I spent some time today roaring around the neighborhood. I got a lot of mouth agape looks, but I can't tell if it's the car, the noise, or the smell that's driving that  :burnout:

My 451 stroker B block with Ross pistons and moly rings did the same thing when it was revved in neutral with no miles. Now with about 50 miles it seems to have stopped. IE nice and clean out the exhaust with a little squirt on the throttle.

You need to burn a tank of fuel to break it in and just get rid of the oil everywhere. For some reason motors seem to smoke at first. I recall just change my camshaft, not sure if oil got on the headers or what but the engine bay was smoking away while the cam was being broken in at 2500 rpms. After a bt the smoke stop..and I went back in to the garage ha ha.

If the smoke does not stop--and good chance it will, I would guess its the intake gasket.

Have you bedded the rings in? As said above you need a few miles on the motor to allow everything to normalise, some performance motors will burn a slight amount of oil in the first 500 - 1000 miles. Drive and keep an eye on the oil level.   :2thumbs:
I have had a couple of PVC valves fail from new and cause oil burning.   :22yikes:
