Factory wheel question?
« on: September 17, 2009 - 10:00:07 AM »
My car has no build sheet. It's a ca built car.   It was a 318 4 speed car with ralley dash and console. I dont have a door sticker on the car either to tell what tire size. But how do I know if it came with hubcaps or ralley wheels or magnums?  It had old mags on it when I got it and I brought some ole regular rims with it from the guys place. He had 4 or 5 other cars there to. But is it possible my car had Ralley rims or not?  I wanna get the correct door tire size tag.  Ever see 4 speed cars with hubcaps on e bodies besides poverty?  I bought some 70 hubcaps for my car , but now I wonder if I should buy 14 inch ralley rims. I don't have a code on the fender tag for ralley rims.  Anyway I can tell?

I do know it is a 318 4spd 323 suregrip with ralley dash, bucket seats, sport mirrors, 6 way, flat hood, M46 option, standard steering, standard disc brakes.   I really do want to put the car back just the way it came.  I think it is the only car ever built the way it is with these particular options all things considered.  Seems without a build sheet, I may be stuck wondering to some degree.  It also had an am radio with front and rear speaker control.

Could you get disc brake e bodies with 14 inch stock rims in 1970?

The only way to tell what wheels came on the car is by looking on the build sheet.

Just an opinion, but if it came with a rallye dash it would seem to make sense for it to have come with rallye wheels as well.

I don't know about 1970 Plymouths but my '72 Challenger Rallye (rallye dash) came with steel wheels, white side wall tires and full size Dodge hubcaps.  :2cents:

Alan, I have no idea about the rims but those are an interesting set of options.  Was this a custom order car you think?  :clueless:  Can you back track the owners and see if they recall how the car was set up originally?

If it had rally rims, wouldn't that show up on the tag?  :clueless:

1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

If it did come with ralley wheels, I wonder if it would of been 14x5.5 or 14.6 rims?  What size are yours Neil?  And I do realise now I have to do some deeper research in this area.  Are yours date coded for a 70?

Has anyone ever seen a flat hood car come with rallies?  I know my car with it's special code could be in a different group all by itself, but I don't want to just stick on anything just because I wanted to.  And when I order a door sticker for the tire code, it would have to match the rims.   I really want this car to be right in every way it came as built if possible.

Was your car a 4 speed car? sure grip?  I realize things can be different with a 70 and a 74.  what tire size was on your car  78 series?

You just never know what they could have been,  Besides if you dont have the build sheets or anything no one could say they are incorrect for your car and I do have a set of rallye wheels on my car we can deal on
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

what`s up with your 15"rallyes?   were they not available for your car in `70?   I like the way they look under a purple car.

This is just off the top of my head...

I don't think 14" steel wheels fit on disk brake cars, but 14" rallies do.

I don't think you would get 15" wheels on a base model car unless special ordered.

Add it up and logic dictates you'd likely have gotten 14" rallies on your car.

I believe 14 x 6 was the norm in 1970.

Wheel codes were only placed on the build sheets...not the tag.  If you don't have the build sheet, there is no way to tell what your car origonally came with.  The only thing you can do is find out what wheels were available and choose the one you like the best.

My 73 318 Rallye Challenger came stock with the road wheels.  It doesn't matter if the  car had a Ralye dash or not.

Again, don't know if 1970 vs. 1972 made a difference but my car has disc brakes and came with 14"x5.5" steel wheels from the factory.  :dunno:

I think 15" rims only came on 440/Hemi cars, I think....

Im positive it came with 14 inch rims, and looking at the htr that Barry runs, it says  with exterior trim code a46     Mine has an exterior trim code of m46  which it doesnt even list either way. I am hoping that maybe Barry may have a little input on this.  Either way it goes, I want it to be right.   Or as right as can be without the buildsheet or door tag.

Gordon, I'm not trading my 15x7 rallies for no 14 inch :smilielol:    I can get 14's at a very good price anywhere.  Just like you did :2thumbs:

With no broadcast sheet, your spare tire & wheel may offer a clue if it is the original?

Since the car had set in a garage in the desert since 1973, it would be extremely hard to find out anything about this car now.
