This is the car I had when I was dating my wife 24 yrs ago. I sold it when we got married to buy a house. In June of 2004 my wife bought it back for our anniversary. By then the car was a basket case from sitting in the woods for 16 yrs. But she is home and not goin anywhere. Thats why I'm tackling it. Besides after seeing some of the resurrections on here, I have confidence I can do it.

As far as sandblasting goes:

Tell me about it!
I've been blasting sections on mine in intervals over the last weeks.
Everytime I go back indoors, I feel like I was at the beach all day with all the media all over me.

Just be sure not the forget to put on some type of dust mask and whatever you do, don't use sand. You can, but you will need a special sealed breathing apparatus to avoid Silicosis.

I have a hood, I still looked like pigpen when I was done. I was blasting in my driveway over a tarp. I'm sure I got some chuckles from passerbies. :grinyes:

Yes, a lung respiratory disease.

First signs are pain in your lungs. Ask me how I know. I stopped using sand long ago.
 
What happens is that when the sand hits metal at high speed, it fragments. Some turns into dust. The dust has sharp edges that connect onto your lung sacs inside your lungs.

My preferred method now of blasting is to remove paint first with paint remover. Srape and clean off. Then blast. Way less work in the long run done this way. Also less chance of sheet metal warpage besides since you won't be putting as much effort of stripping in any particular area.

I was using sand, Was! It didn't flow very well. Someone recommended red oxide? What do you use now? I am mainly using it for rust removal, not paint removal. Car has a lot of surface rust.

Yes, use Aluminum Oxide. Or Red Garnet is better if you can find it.
Aluminum Oxide has a very fast cutting action. Once you start using it, you will see how much faster it cuts and gets metal clean.

If you plan to re claim the media you used and put it back into your blaster, keep in mind that all that rust dust will be in with it. So a good air mask is always important in using everytime.

Make sire you get a second air purifier also. One at the compressor and then feeding into the one I have shown in the link. Condensation plugs up pressure pots big time if that's what you're using.
