This is still misleading.. the part that explodes is not the valve body, nor the sprague, but the CLUTCH RETAINER. Get a billet steel front cluth retainer and the issue is solved regardless of any other things you feel like buying. You can still hurt a sprague with a low band apply valve body (albeit much less liekly) and guess what.. the factory drum will still explode.
The single hardest sell in a transmission build is the new drum. Nobody wants to buy it, until they see a car almost cut in half or a driver leave in an ambulance.

Wow! I don't think anyone was thinking that the valve body was exploding!! You need a low band apply VB no matter what, they just flat out make the low gear take off stronger.

I believe the accepted thought is the LBA will permanently stop the explosions. It wont. Less likely, yes. but still possible. The only true 100% fix is to replace the clutch drum. It ends up costing slightly more than the nice tranny shield that the schrapnel can go right thru.

I think of it as taking the detonator out of a bomb, but leaving the high explosive and calling it safe. It's safer, but still the main explosive power is there.

There was a post I think on Moparts about a fellow with a 1/2 ton truck, racing a 500" witha  Gear Vendors who was shifting to first-over while racing. It was flattening the teeth of the overunning clutch every time. This is what leads to the drum explosions. he was very lucky, but had to pull the trans and spend another $600 on a drum and the LBA valve body for it.

The #1 reason for a drum explosion is the sprag rolling over in a burn out. DO NOT DO A WATER BURN OUT IN LOW GEAR WITH A NON LBA MANUAL V.B.!!!! I have never had a customer blow up a drum with a LBA VB.

It's when you come out of the water that you have to be out of 1st gesr, when the tires hit the concrete or asphault. I start off in 1st and quickly shift it when I do burnouts, into 2nd and 3rd and haven't had a sprag failure in 35 years, even with a low 8 second car and I've never used an aftermarket spag. Just never come out of the water in 1st.  :2cents:

The big block Duster I raced,I put it in third gear stomped the gas and smoked 'em away.

My 7.9 compresion 318 didn't have a whole bunch of low end TQ, and with 29" tall slicks and a stock vert I always started my burnouts in 1st  :)

With the 416 I could do a burnout in 6th gear if I had one

A car like that doesn't even need a burnout!  :grinno:

I believe she was doing a first gear burnout. No,a bolt in sprag will not prevent this (it already had one) A VB with low band apply will though.  :burnout:

Thats the problem right there! Absolutely no 1st gear burnouts...... I had the cheeetah in my chally with no issues! It clearly says in the instructions not to do that!....  :working:

this new tranny will have a low band apply though.....

i do this as well...... as soon as the tires break loose I shift then come out of the water box...
