How long will you drive your car, age wise that is?
« on: September 22, 2009 - 10:45:55 PM »
Today while I was getting gas in Barstow Ca. in pulls a 1970 AMC Javelin SST, copper in color with the “Go Package”.  The driver pulled into the island next to me and out steps an older gentleman.  Of course I went over to check out his car (Please forgive me for no pictures, but I didn’t have my camera with me  :bricks1:).  It turned out that he is 92 years “young” and his name is Leonard Barnett. He bought the car new in December of 69.  The car is all original with a 390, 4 barrel, and a four-speed trans and Keystone rims.  Other than some fade paint on the roof and hood the car was very clean and all stock.  After talking cars with Mr. Barnett for a while we both left at the same time, as he pulled away hi spun the tires and grabbed a second gear chirp.  Meeting Mr. Barnett, I could wipe the smile off my face for the rest of the day, and It left me hoping that when I am that old I will still be driving my Hot Rod!

Thanks for the inspiration Leonard, you made my week!  :2thumbs:

I hope I will still be alive and physically able to drive my Challengers when I am 92! The T/A and the '09 are both manual trannys, plus the T/A has manual steering, so I better plan to keep in shape!! :burnout:

Great story.  My grandmother is currently 103 and still ticking, and I have some of her DNA flowing through my veins.  Hopefully, there will still be gasoline for sale when I'm 92 so I can drive my Cuda.

I'll drive it until one of the kids want it.

Cool story BTW.  :grinyes:  It reminds me of a guy I met that is the original owner of his 1970 GTO.  I used to see it as a kid then I was able to meet him a few months ago.  Drives it everyday, it's his only car.

Believe it or not, he states he has over 700,000 miles on that car.  :faint:

:2thumbs: Good for ole Leonard, with that spunk and spirit I'd say he could be Leon from the old rock song.  :roflsmiley: I guess as long as you are physicall able (eye sight being a key factor) and "remember" where home is, drive it! 92 huh? Well hopefully that means I have at least 30 years left to  :burnout:  :roflsmiley:

Great story, you need to meet up with him again and take a few pics of the old boy and his ride, we could make him an honorary member of the Mopar Hall of Fame.

I would like to run into Leonard again, he was a great "dude" with lots of spunk, and get some pictures of him with his car. And yes, he belongs in the Mopar Hall of Fame.

My wife keeps asking me why I am smiling so much.  And I tell her every time I think about Leonard and how he is still driving his baby, it brings a smile to my face.
