Any Carpenters on here?
« on: September 30, 2009 - 06:30:33 PM »
I have a question on building my own rafters or trusses on my garage.  28 foot wide and 1 ft overhang with a 3 12 pitch.  What would be the cheapest way of doing that and how many would I need if I put them at 24" centers.

Was told something at home depo and want to see if it was true.  What size of lumber should I use and what would the design be?  How much lumber will I need?  I have an idea on how I want to do it but others may know a better way and a cheaper way of doing it.    Feed Back Please!

As a life-long carpenter.....

..........you need to ask a structural engineer.

Do not scrimp on trusses, buy them pre-engineered & ready to go.  :2cents:

I just was not wanting to spend 120 or so for a rafter then over 100 to have them delivered.  I have plans and will build my own that will work.  Just wondered if there were better ideas out there.

24" CENTERS? Here they would be at 16" Centers....but we have snow! :smilielol:
Here we can't build our own rafters without a engineers stamp. So we might as well buy them! Here there are companies that only build rafters?

Not too much snow here so 24" centers will be fine.  We can build our own rafters here.  I have checked with a couple of companies so for and the lowest I got was 75 a rafter.  It has been a while since I built them myself but was suggested to build them for a gable type roof out of 2x8 and 16 foot long for each side.  I will talk to them more on this tomorrow.  I do understand about snow load.  Been there and done that.  It was a florida contractor that told me about what to use on my rafters.

I do understand what barry is talking about.  I have been advised in Alabama that 24" centers are fine for my area.  I just want to do that work myself unless I can find some rafters that are cheaper than I have found so for.

I would want better bracing than 24" centers, when the strong winds come you will be glad you did.

Trusses and Rafters(typical framing stock) are different.  2x8x16's(conventional framing) will work depending on species and the loads required in the area.  24" centers are often used with trusses here, but they are engineered for those spans and spacing and often require thicker plywood and additional clips in between trusses on the plywood.  A local lumber yard should be able to price the whole thing up as a package for you.  I think lumber is pretty reasonable right now.

Gordon,  you are going to be one worn out tired ole man when you are done. Doing your own forming, doing the concrete work, building the garage. And all this on weekends or more like 18 hrs a weekend. Hoping the weather holds up to. It is getting into winter time buddy.  And you are the oldest member in the world here.  You sure yer up to this? Peggy just showed me 30x40 installed for 8995. Financing available.  It sure felt good when I just wrote a check and watched 6 people swing a hammer and cut with saws. You are going to be worn out when it comes time to build your car. I feel for you. Your bones are going to ache like crazy for many many weeks.  Good luck, and if you happen to ask me.....I am not a carpenter

I am up to the work.  I built a 24x28 by myself in 3 weeks and I did all the work on the weekends and things.  I understand I am getting old but I am not disabled on doing this kind of work.  I have already got some help lined up on this project.

I do know the difference in Trusses and Rafters.  When I call the lumber yards I ask for Rafters.  Some say they have trusses.  Trusses are more structural I know.

The nice thing with the engineered trusses are the clearspan (no posts) and ease of installation.  But more $$$ per unit.

I wish I could get a 30x40 up this way for 8995, heck I'd have to add a 2or3 to the front of that up this way. :walkaway:

I called on place for a 32x28 for 7100 but I can not get financing right now for it.  It is a kit.  I think I can build my own trusses anyway.
