I'm a developer and have built and sold hundreds of homes. 24" is fine unless your local codes call for 16", but I live in hurricane alley with the strongest codes in the country, and 24" is fine, but we also must use engineered truss systems, which means every job is designed as a "system" to work properly. Installing cross members, or catwalks to connect the trusses will go a long way toward preventing catastrophic windstorm damage.
2x4s or 2x6s would be the biggest question, and how they are built. You will need help setting them. Dont try to be a hero by doing it all yourself. Walking tie beams is a young mans job. Its too easy to slip or fall and get seriously hurt.
Good luck whatever you do, and be careful.

I am just getting really down right now.  I was really excited about building my own garage and getting my car done.  Seems everyone here thinks I should get trusses and they are exspensive to me.  I am not made out of money and I do not make what I did last year.  I do not have good credit so getting a loan is out of the question.  I just can not lay down 8 to 9 grand at one time.  So it may take longer to get my car done now and to get my garage done.  It is just dishearting I thought someone would have a good idea about rafters or trusses and not to pay 120 bucks for each one.

40 bucks a truss in the swapper for used out of chicken houses, sometimes 30.  I see them all the time in there. This is another option for you

Do you have a link for that?  I might try to see what the steel trusses are costing or something else.

How about a Flat roof?  Would be simpler but the lumber would need to be a little bigger.  Not "Flat" but with say a 1 or 2 pitch and some Roll roofing.

why not use a steel frame?   I don`t know about material prices in the states, but I built mine cheaper (or at least not more expensive) and a LOT stronger.   Have you tried getting a used steel frame?  that might be an option too. ( I have the advantage of being a metalworker offcourse) If you build a flat roof construction, you should be able to get it done in steel pretty cheap, and the lighter wood you need then will be a lot cheaper too.
whatever you do, use oversized  :2thumbs:   I can hang another project to the ceiling above the cuda, and still sleep tight...

How can you make a flat roof out of wood 28' long?  Been trying to figure that one out.

Gordon, the guy 4 houses up from me is building a flat roof horse barn right now. You will see it as it is being built this weekend. It may give you some ideas to.  And also, you only need around 1600 bucks or less for trusses at 120 each. that isnt bad huh. I think you could do this

I think I have it figured out making trusses out of 2x8's for the top and 2x6 for the bottom run and 2x4's for the braces.  I have looked at the horse barn I just do not want poles in the middle of my garage if I can stay away from that.
