I did constuction work for 10-11 years. I would forget the trusses and build a ridge/rafter system out of 2x8's. Make it 16" on center and 1/2" plywood with plywood clips. No need to make trusses and it can be a one man job. As with any construction check your local building codes first though.

Just some other options for you.

:iagree:  I actually prefer stick built to trusses. I understand load carrying ability of trusses and all of that. Thay are a little stronger than stick built in normal circumstances. BUT in case of fire, trusses fail way sooner than stick built.  AND, if one truss fails, the next ones have to absorb the extra load--they aren't designed to do that and they will fail soon.  Stick built can absorb extra loads for much longer.  I learned something from a 30+ fire department/construction career....     :cooldancing:

The way I am thinking on my rafters is close to what  a truss would be made.

Would you make them out of 2x4's or 2x6's?

...build a ridge/rafter system out of 2x8's. Make it 16" on center and 1/2" plywood with plywood clips.

2x4's and 2x6's will not have enough rigidity to carry the unsupported 14' span that you're looking at.  I know it's more money, but this is something you'll only have to build once if you do it right.  Gordon, a roof is the LAST place you want to take a shortcut on.

Imagine 5 years from now when your car is done and sitting in your shop with all your toys/tools and the roof caves in because you wanted to save $500 right now.  Think everything insurance won't cover will cost more than $500?

Ok then 2x8 with the ties being 2x4 and the supports being 2x4.  How does that sound?

:iagree: I think 2x4 ties would be ok. But don't skip on the rafters.

If you want, and if yer home this weekend, you can use my trailer to go get your car.  Since Dons car will be in one door area, I believe we could store your car on the roll around coasters to the right of mine in the corner, or maybe where the duster is and put dons by my car. It may give you an energy boost to swing a hammer faster   When I am at home, you might could push it out the door and do some work on it to.  But no body work in my shop.  Also, my shop stays locked up tight with security on when im not home, and Peggy will not allow anyone inside. So when I am home, you may be able to start doing a few small things to your car and it will be closer to you for when you get the roof up over your new garage. I have had 4 cars in my garage before.  I will be building Dons engine in there soon, and another stroker engine, so I dont want any body work dust in there. Plus I will be selling mopar parts stuff out of there in the near future. I believe your shop would be ready in 3 or 4 months if the weather holds up for you.  And this way you could do the under hood prepping, the front suspension and other little things to get you going on your project. I am getting ready to pour another slab and install a 12x 20 carport right behind the door where the duster sets.

My dad and oldest brother are builders and I have helped on a lot of projects over the years, one that sticks out in my memory was a 80 x 120 horse barn, after all the trusses were up the next morning my little brother was climbing into the trusses and heard a crack the whole deal came crashing down almost killing him as he road it down, come to find out the engineers screwed up and the insurance guy could not blame my dads company as he had extra bracing above and beyond the blue prints, be careful and do it right the first time, also check with local codes for things like rat wall when you pour cement if the inspector fails that its hard to go back later and fix it.

I agree if you go the stick built route that 2x4s are inadequate, but, with designed trust systems, I've built MANY using only 2x4s. Using quality structural wood, and having them spliced together properly, spans of up to 26-28 feet are doable but that is about the limit, with occasional girders in critical areas

Well Alan that does not do me any good. Most of the the work I need to do it is body work right now.  Also I would be distracted.  I hope to get it built quicker that that also.
