That really depends on how the distributor was installed when the wires were plugged in for the most part.
You need to line the timing mark up on the damper with the zero line on the timing tab being sure that cylinder number one is on top dead center and not on the exhaust stroke. Remember that the crank turns twice for one rotation of the cam which means that when the marks line up, you have a 50-50 chance of being on TDC
If the valve cover is off, you can check to see if both valves on number one are closed as they will be on top dead center. If the cover is on, then you can remove the sparkplug from number one and rotate the crank. When a puff of air comes out the plug hole, then you know you are coming up on TDC and line the marks up.
Then take the distributor cap off and observe where the rotor is pointing and that should be number one-or very close to it. Make a mark on the side of the distributor and put the cap back on. If you are correct, the wire that matches up with the mark should be the wire that goes to number one sparkplug. It may take some turning of the distributor to get it to run correctly from that point as the distributor can be rotated enuf to be a plug off without much effort.
