440 Intake recommendations
« on: October 07, 2009 - 08:50:40 AM »
Hey all,

I'm wrapping up my 440 build and need advice on a good intake.....my motor is stroked to 493 and will have a flat tappet cam in it but I need an intake and carb setup.....so I was first looking for the intake...but there are so many different kinds out there....any advice?  The car is a 73 'Cuda and will be street driven, maybe taken to the track once in a while, but it's main purpose is the street.

any ideas?

My choice would be the Holley street dom & a 950 Proform race series carb

I have the ralley (not too sure if that's what they call it) hood (with scoops).....I put a 1" spacer on my intake now and the air cleaner hits....so I would believe it may be an issue.....

I have the Street Dominator with a 1/2" spacer and a Proform 850 under my flat hood. I did have to use a K&N air filter assembly with a drop-base.

The Victor will flow more air than any single plane out there, period. The thing is you always see them tested on motors like 383's that don't have the cubes or heads or cam to use it and they predictably perform poorly. When I yanked the Performer RPM from my 416 and got the Vic and did a little head work it made 40 more HP at the peak, it moved the peak from 5,400 to 6,250 and it lost a little low end TQ. I didn't care because it still has more than enough :grinyes: If you have good heads adequate for the cubes that's my choice along with a big carb like the mentioned 950.  If you have inadequate heads, then there are many that will perform about the same like the Dominator or TM-7 or the factory single plane. The heads will be the real cork to better performance.  :2cents:

the Holley Street Dom is great for hood clearance & being able to use a big air filter ontop

The heads are 452's with light port work done to them....I say light because his words to me were "We'll open up the ports a little bit to get some better flow through there".

Vic (the engine builder) is someone I trust 100%...he's been racing mopars for decades and builds all his motors; I trust his judgement when building this motor.

Hopefully he will contact me soon to figure out the cam specs.  He did mention having ot use a flat tappet vs roller cam because of price.

Not sure if you could tell from his setup or not, but what would the difference in HP and TQ be if the RPM performer vs the Holley Street Dom were used?  Really just looking at ballpark #'s, nothing exact.

the street dom is just a bit lower adding hood clearance & romm for a bigger filter which has to help the power
