BTW Terry, would you plumb it to the trans cooler in the rad first then to the ext cooler last on it's way back to the trans or vice-versa?

I was told to always run it through the tranny cooler first, THEN the radiator cooler to help warm up the transmission.
Running it the other way would over cool it in cooler weather.

My 518 in my Grand Cherokee, doesn't shift right away in the winter time till it warms up, mainly because I have the tranny cooler after the radiator.  That reminds me that I have to change it before it gets any colder.

I have never seen that to be a problem around here. If you run it through he cooler first then the radiator,in the summer time, you are defeating your purpose. I would run it to the radiator, then the aux cooler,if it caused a problem in zero weather or something,I would put a card board in front of the aux cooler or put a rag around it.

Well having driven it in cooler weather I haven't noticed any problems with it through the rad first, I have thought about how much heat is actually created in the trans in the first place. :dunno:  Is the aux cooler overkill?

Not at all overkill........  A transmission generates a little heat through friction and minor pumping losses, but the torque converter can generate a TON of heat until the stator starts to freewheel.  Aux coolers are common on OE towing and performance packages for very good reason.  The extra cooling greatly extends the life of the fluid and the transmission as a result.  OEM's never add components and spend money unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks Quagmire, if I think of it next time I go for a long cruise I'll check the temps of the cooler lines In/Out.

If your trans is like the one in my Dodge truck don't they have a solenoid that won't let it shift cold. It has to reach a certain temp before it will shift normally.

exactly.   Mine only does it in the winter months. I can make it shift when I let of the gas and get back into it. Only for a couple of miles though.
