340 camshaft bearing replacement question
« on: October 08, 2009 - 11:06:25 PM »
So it turns out the 340 I am working on needs the cam bearings replaced. So I have new bearings and the tool to install them and I am wondering if there is any special order they need to be installed in or any tricks I should know. I know I need to make sure I get them in straight. Thanks.

They install back to front and make sure the oil holes are lined up.

The trick is to get them square with each other.  To do this you need to intall the back 2 with handle out the front and the front 2 with handle out the back (middle doesn't matter).  The insures that the tool is straight and the bearings will end up straight.

Before I got my own tool, when a machine shop would install the bearings, the cam would always be snug when turning.  If you do yourself and take your time the cam will spin easy.

The goal never changes - Stop the 60' timer with your back tires

Good idea! That way you have a good reference to make it square with the rod location in the cam journal.  :2thumbs:

you will nto be able to replace the rear brg without removing the cam plug & the tranny canot be bolted to the engine while doing this
Basically you have to install from the rear & follow the advice above
