Ok, so which lever to use?? 3.8 4.2, and tell me why please.
« on: October 11, 2009 - 02:20:05 PM »
Im building a 450 HP 440 with a little extra converter (about 2400 or so converter).   The car will see less than 5,000 miles a year, and mostly be a car show pony.  However I do want to race a little on the weekends, now and again.

I will be ordering a new transmission rebuild kit, the transgo shift kit.   I dont know the condition of the transmission that came with the car I have, but I have an old school tranmission man who is quite capable, and reasonable too.

I just want a good performing, solid tranny,  tell me the reason why I want the 3.8 or 4.2 lever?   I can assume there is a reason why people are talking about this lately.   Tks.    Feel free to chime in please!!

A 4.2 is the best, the 3.8 is the easiest to get (Dealer part # 2125067 )  The ratio is how much leverage the band gets clamped on with. (multiplied by 3.8 or 4.2)  :2thumbs:

The 5.0 creates more 2-3 shift bind up and is really not recommended by most Torqueflite "guru's".

Tactransman, I noticed you used Transmission Parts USA.   I see they show a master rebuild kit for the Torqueflite 727.  Its $62 including clutches and steels.    Is this sufficient or should I be looking for something more HP perhaps.   I see other vendors sell rebuild kits with the alto reds?.    Like my first post reads, approx 450 HP  440 .060 over, moderate cam, approx 2500 stall.    If this rebuild kit is fine so be it, but if there is something else I should strive for what would it be.   Yes, I would like the 4.2 lever, but all in all not racing every weekend, but occasionally.  I was thinking the Transgo performance transmission reprogramming kit also.     So (if) I go with the Transmission Parts USA rebuild kit thats $62 the Transgo kit is $72.   The 4.2 lever is ??.   Will the kit listed above cut it for my needs.   I dont want overkill but I want something solid, dependable.

Thanks again Tachtransman....
Kevin

Yes,that kit will work fine with you. The OEM clutches are VERY good quality clutches.

Here is a good place to get the 4.2 lever. If you call and talk to John Cope, tell him that Terry from TAC Transmissions sent ya!

I would also recommend old style front servo OR plugging the "standard" style front servo bleed hole. Otherwise 4.2lever could make small 2-3 bind up.
Orifice cup plug in direct clutch oil feed passage also helps too (this comes with the transgo reprogramming kit)  :smokin:

I would recommend alto red eagle clutches if you have +550hp.

4.2, and as mentionned you may need to partially block the servo apply passage. Really easy to do after the fact if needed.
