70 non-AC blower motor
« on: October 11, 2009 - 02:57:36 PM »
Has anyone found a replacement blower motor for a '70 Challenger?  I ordered one from Pep Boys, but it looked like an AC type, with the flange.

Same goes for NAPA, they have the motor with the flange (they says it's non-AC) but the AC version (which looks right in the photo) is not available.

My original is pretty much seized.  I pulled it apart thinking maybe I can repair it.  The best I think I can do is to remove the rust, replace the brush springs (assuming they should exist), and lub the bushings.

Any other suggestions?

That's the motor I tried to order from them, but it wasn't available. No stock showing anywhere.  It didn't sound like they would be able to get one, but it was Saturday when I called so they couldn't contact the supplier.  I'll give them a call today.

Thanks guys.  I'll see if the one I ordered from Pep Boys comes in.  It's been about a week and a half, so I own them another phone call.

I might be able to fix my old one too.  It doesn't look so bad inside, now that I've dissolved away the rust.  It doesn't look like there's much to it.  I soaked it in Oxisolv (from Eastwood), so I'm not sure if I hurt anything.

I know very little about electrical motors.  Are the windings coated with anything, or is it just bare copper wire?  That's the only thing I'm worried about with the soak.  If they were insulated with something, it might be toast.

Anyway, thanks again for the help.

The motor windings are insulated with a clear (or slightly brownish) varnish. I don't know if Oxisolv would dissolve it or not, but if it did, your right - it's toast.
