In the search for 1hp per cubic inch, no one has ever made a convincing argument why a 383 would be better than a 451 (400 stroker). A 383 has the weight of a big block, but the power of a small block.

So just for arguement, show me a stock SB that puts out 335-390 HP.

The top-of-the-line 383 was the dual four-barrel version with compression lowered to 9.60:1. Nevertheless, it produced 390 hp at 4800 rpm and 485 pounds-feet of torque at 3600 rpm.
The 383, however, continued to be a perennial favorite as a performance powerplant for the next eight years. Power output for the 383 was diminished in 1964 so as not to embarrass the horsepower ratings of the larger engines.
