My favorite motor is the 383 for various reasons, high winding and very cheap plentiful engines to find. easy horsepower to build. You can also find the cars cheaper than a 440 car.
Here's some nice reading for the neigh sayers ,lol

:2thumbs: Certainly nothing wrong with a 383, it's got the good low end torque (not as good as 440 though) and the high rev's of a small block. A very endurable engine for sure, and can you say stroker?

If for no other reason then 7k rpm sounds better that 6k.

The 383 is definitely a great engine, but everything that can be done to it can be done to a 440!

However a bit cheaper, no reason necessarily but building a 440 is more..  $$$$ ...?

Oh I can understand that logic. Mine came with a 318.....she'll be getting an upgrade to a 440. But I'm not going back to an original car either.

I for sure understand what your saying, I would do the same thing if wanting it to look original, but I would stroke a 400 block and it would still look like a 383.

In the search for 1hp per cubic inch, no one has ever made a convincing argument why a 383 would be better than a 451 (400 stroker).  A 383 has the weight of a big block, but the power of a small block.

Sorry, I remain unconvinced.

to each his own,
So just for arguement, show me a stock SB that puts out 335-390 HP.
AND in 1963...
The top-of-the-line 383 was the dual four-barrel version with compression lowered to 9.60:1. Nevertheless, it produced 390 hp at 4800 rpm and 485 pounds-feet of torque at 3600 rpm.
The 383, however, continued to be a perennial favorite as a performance powerplant for the next eight years. Power output for the 383 was diminished in 1964 so as not to embarrass the horsepower ratings of the larger engines.

Besides, there was a comparison done between 2 equally equipped b bodies, cant remember where i found it anyway, the 383hp and 440hp only had .01 difference in the quarter mile, so your prejudice is unfounded
