Back 6 years ago when i had my 383 built, and at the same time another guy had his 440 built,we had both engines built the same, ported heads, same cam, etc. my 383 made 8 more HP (507) while his 440 made 499. i think his motor made 35 ft.lb. more tourque. Driving both cars on the street, my cars pulls stronger on the top end, butn the low end both cars seem the same. Ive always loved the 383 as they will make the same power as the 440. So when i blow someone doors in, i say its only a 383!!! :cooldancing:Back in 88, my freind john had a 71 383 cuda 4 speed (323 gears) rebuilt bone stock motor, drove it too mopar nats, raced it, and ran 1396@101 in the 1/4. in 90 deg. heat!!! We need more 383 people here!! :ylsuper:

My Charger runs a 383 and it is a good engine. But bottom line is it aint 440+ cubes either.

The idea of a 440 running 0.02 better than the 383 is a load of bad testing.

Making an engine N/A run 1.6 Horsepower per cube

383 = 612.8 Horsepower Flywheel

440 = 704 Horsepower Flywheel

If that = 0.02 seconds only, I must live in a parallel universe to the 1 you are in.

Calculators dont lie.

Sure you can make a 383 run harder with many things but if you did all the same upgrades to a 440 you once again are 100+ horsepower more than the 383... there are more cubes to make use of bottom line.
those numbers are right from ma mopar on the ad in my previous message

I for sure understand what your saying, I would do the same thing if wanting it to look original, but I would stroke a 400 block and it would still look like a 383.

My plan exactly. My car originally came with a 318 but at one time I had a 383 in it and it was a blast. My plan is to use a 400 and stroke it out to either a 451 or 470. Then I am going to badge it as a 383 car and have fun with it.

Horsepower is dependent on how much air you can get in/out of the engine.  With the same heads/intake/manifolds/cam the 383 won't be too far from the 440.  It's peak will just be at a high RPM.

Honestly, I didnt start this thread to say a 440 wont make more Horsepower, it was so not to discount the 383 for performance. I always hear "440" or 426". The 383 is a high performer in its own right, not to be discounted as a lesser motor. Ma Mopar put more Big blocks in more cars then anyone else, we are spoiled with big blocks. Most ford and cheby guys are tickled with a 327 or 350 because BB's were few and far between.

I have an N code 70 cuda that has a 440 in it from when i bought it 10 yrs or so ago.  I am getting ready to do a resto on the car and a 383 is going back in it. Back in the day everyone just threw a 440 in place of a 383 because they didnt have all the stroker kits and aluminum heads we have today.  Now 383 blocks are a dime a dozen and you can build a 383 motor that puts out just as much HP as the 440 at a fraction of the cost. I remember a few years back i turned down two 383 complete motors for $400 cus i couldnt think of anything to do with them.

Any engine can be made to make any horsepower level you want. Someone mentioned the costs. they are not the same because there are no pistons to get a true 10.5:1 383 without extra machining. Or extra money for the pistons. Read that artical and you'll see the best they can get from it was 9.2. That's because of the deck height and piston combo. Otherwise, it's just cubic odllars. I have  afriend with a steel-except-hood B body that runs 12.20s on a modern hydraulic cammed 383. But, it runs 4K stall, and 4.30s. The same body car, with a 440, 4.10s, and 3K stall ran 11.70s. The 383 total cost was over $8K. The 440... $6800.  Also it's kind of funny.. the modern rebuild 335hp 383 had to have a zero deck, lighter pistons, much better ring seal, and state of the art valve jobs. I would like to see someone dyno a factory warranty long block that way and see how honest they were. I'll bet it cant get past 300hp.

You can get 10-1 pistons and like one of my 383's i built,(have 2 fresh ones on engines stands) I used 1967 440HP closed chamber heads, which brings the Comp ratio right up and outperforms open chamber heads.

Pistons dont make it 10:1. The math does. So I'm assuming those are calculated compression ratios? Even with the 915 and 516s you have to do work for 10:1. The last 383 I blueprinted at 9.8:1. It had 906 heads milled to 80ccs (that was .060 milling as I recall), steel gasket, and flat tops with 6cc valve reliefs at zero deck which also required about .040 off the decks with extra effort to save the ID pad numbers. Typical 915/516 chambers are around 83cc if you use nailhead valves and performance seats. It's just hard to get them where they should be. Once they are there... they run very similar to a great 340... bigger ports and valves and bigger bore. Get them to breath and they run like mad.

We need more 383 people here!! :ylsuper:
I am one! Since I am the recent owner of a 383 Mopar ('66 Plymouth Fury VIP)
I like all the '60s Mopar engines, but when shopping for a '66 Fury, I wanted a big block. Those cars are a little too heavy for a 318 V-8, unless it's modified. But even then, it won't produce the same torque as a big block will.

As for the 383 VS 440, I have read that a 383 can be safely bored to 438 cubic inches, so it should make similar power and torque of a stock 440. Not that I wouldn't want a 440-powered '66 Plymouth. If one showed up when I was shopping for one, I certainly would not have passed it up!

I guess I could pull a plug wire and act like its a 383 :blah:    383's in all honesty made mopar. they made 3 mil of them 750k 440's.   So you will hear a lot of 383 stories compared to a 440.   I really get a kick out of hearing 318 stories. I think its cool when the bottom of the barrel kicks ass.

It all started for me with a 273 in an old Dodge truck :burnout: that old monster sure could scream :2thumbs:
I do like the 383 also, they are a good engine with a heap of potential. I will be putting a 383 back in my M46, with some modifications :bigsmile:

Same here. My first Mopar engine was a 273 V-8 in a '66 Dodge Dart GT.
