Hello all. I’m looking for some advice, help and opinions on building my 440. I’m looking for a streetable and reliable engine to go in my 72 Challenger. I have a 72 (or at least I believe it’s a 72) engine out of a Winnebago supposedly with only 13k miles on it and the 727 tranny from the same vehicle.
I’m looking at going with a six pack set up and know Demon Carbs. Makes a new set up for the mopar 440, but they don’t provide the intake manifold. So before I start randomly buying parts, maybe you all could answer some of these questions to get me started.
Here are the numbers I’ve found so far, although I haven’t torn into this motor any further than removing the rocker covers to get the head numbers.
The Block # = 3698830 440 5
Heads # = 3462346.
(I’ll of course be taking the motor to a reputable builder to have it completely gone through and assuming everything checks out I’ll proceed with machining etc…)
So……
1) Has anyone used this set-up from Demon? Problems? Good? Bad? Opinions?
2) Assuming I’m set on using this six pack set up from Demon, any suggestions on a manifold to use? The rep at Demon I spoke w/ said any stock or aftermarket manifold would work. Should I look at stock or something like an Edelbrock unit?
3) Again assuming I’m going w/ the six pack set up and an auto tranny, any suggestions on a cam? One thing to possibly consider is I’m at altitude in Denver CO.
4) What about these heads? Are these worth having re-furbished or would I be better off (more bang for the buck) going again with a new pair of aluminum from Edelbrock?
Thanks for any and all feedback as this will be my first build and I’m SURE there are a million things that I haven’t even thought of yet.
