Bringing back wheels from the dead...

Still trying to figure out the trim ring situation... want them to be brushed, but all that I have seen don't look right.

Has anyone taken chrome ones and put a piece of steel wool to them?  I think they look really nice now after all the work!

Nice Job.....  Trims rings should be stainless, red Scotchbrite pad should work... I'd suggest putting the rings on a wheel & let it spin slowly & apply the abrasive as evenly as possible start with a little oil but do the final work dry.

You did a great job on them.    :wow:   I personally like the chrome trim rings better. They are going to be nice either way.

I want to see someone post pics of restored  "Styled Road Wheels"...AKA "Magnum 500's"  and what they did about the "satin" chrome on the face.

I have seen the brushed trim rings too and they don't look right.  The ones I've seen have a polished lip and brushed centers.  I think my origonal 14" rings are brushed all over.  I think I'll be brushing up a set of the polished ones myself.

I have the original chrome ones that came with the wheels, but they have some road rash on them... it is unfortuante that they are beat up so much, but it does give me the opporunity to give it a go brushing them down... just need a bit of time to get there.

I've a very original '74 challenger with its road wheels, and while I don't claim to be an expert -- I believe that the outer rims of the trim rings are "bright chrome" and the inner "brushed" on '14 inch road wheels.....

The Magnum 500's I did over had the brushed steel face and brushed 14" trim rings.  My car originally came with steel wheels and hub caps (On a Rallye!  :screwy: ) but I got these rims from a '70 Road Runner.  I believe from 1970-1974 they were the same style 14" rims on both cars.

For the brushed steel face, I took some fine steel wool and cleaned up the spokes.  I used semigloss wheel paint for the inserts after some light sanding to help the paint adhere better.  I did not get a mask kit from Paddock or other supplier.  I cut out a cardboard template then taped newspaper around the edges to mask the rest of the wheel.  I did 1 insert at a time.  I had the rim on a rotating support which made it a breeze to sand/paint.  After the paint dried I used a little of the steel wool to clean up any overspray.  I also used fine steel wool for the trim rings.
