How would you conduct an out-of-state transaction?
« on: August 19, 2004 - 04:33:28 PM »
I have found what looks like my ideal Cuda. Its the right color, the right options, in the condition I have been looking for but.......it is out of state. Seller is open to pre buy inspection and seems knowledgable. With the exception of me flying to the cars location, how would you conduct an out-of-state deal? I know the basics of checking titles, matching VINS, current drivers license, etc but what about purchase and transport? Any turn key-solutions out there that do it all?

I have heard of places that will do inspections for you.  I know that ebay has a listing for Pep-Boys and a company called SGS that will do a inspection and send the report to you.
There are several transporters out there and the charge is dependent on how far the car is going.  If I remember right, the transporter can help you with the specifics of how you decide to handle the purchase.  Again, ebay has a list of some of these.  I bought my project out of state and I checked into transport, but I figured the time and money I would spend on getting it myself would have been comparable.  You just have to figure out what is right for your situation.

I see in Hemming's Motor News where guys advertise to inspect a car for you. Hey, a few hundred bucks there saves you a long trip if the car is waaay out of your range. DAS is an auto shipper I see alot on E-bay. Dependable auto shippers is their name. The rates look good, if you want to go that way. It's tough, I know. I bought my car from a dealership in Florida and had it shipped to me in Maryland. Good luck.

Mike . . . . where is the car.  Maybe a board member is close to it and could at least verify its existance.  :P   :P

GREAT idea 4C  ;)
If it's anywhere in the mid-atlantic area, I'd gladly look at it. Can't resist looking at an E-body ;D

:o Be very careful, you sound like you are covering everything but although there are a lot of honest sellers out there, there are a large amount of scammers too. I have been burned pretty bad on a few transactions that took place out of state and the people sounded very knowledgable and reliable then turned out to be lying through their teeth. The best and only way to be sure is to go look yourself. What someone else thinks of this car may not be the same as you do, they may not like it when you would, or vice versa. I wouldn't purchase a large dollar item without seeing it first. If you want an expert to look at it, meet them there. Just my 2 cents.  :D

The car is in Ramsey, Minnesota. The auction doesnt fit the cookie-cutter style scams I have seen and as I said, seller seems ok. However, I have ALWAYS enjoyed the luxury of seeing before buying and when I add up all the incidentals, I dont know if I can do this one economically or not.

If anyone is near this area and would like to ck it out I can supply seller contact info

Know what you mean...  Its a drama.  We went over the photo of our car with a jeweler's loop.  Then, pretty much convinced, drove 12 hours with a trailer, bank check for the amount we wanted to pay, and a few thousand extra in cash for the negotiating process.

Yesterday afternoon, I had an interesting conversation with a S.Texas mopar dealer. He deals in a lot of Mopars. He told me he had two different MN Cuda buyers get their cars home and although all looked well, no detectable rust etc, they were in for a surprise. When they put a jack under the car they claimed the frame would bend under the load. Is this crazy or what? Now I am like any of you saying WTF? Is this guy full of BS or what? Why would e-bodys in MN have soft metal frames? But the dealer is legit, has a good reputation here in TX and claims he has heard it now from two completely different and totally unassociated people.

Can anyone comment on this unlikely phenomenon?

:o Genius, good idea!  ::) At least you could get someone familiar with what they are looking at, a current e-body owner. Especially one who has gone through some of the restoration process and can look for the things that could be hidden. Good idea 4C!  ;D
