From what I've read at Moparts: 273-340=525, 360=550, 440=670, 426=765.  The
Hemi weight seems ridiculous, but I can't really prove otherwise either so who knows.
Iron block Ford 4.6 - 5.4 Mod motors weight in at 500-550 lbs, the aluminum block ones are 425lbs..........

Ball park I've used is small block 500, big block 600, Hemi 700.

That number is not accurate. Compare it with actual shipping weights of these engines at any crate vendor and they are nowhere near that.  Maybe an iron block supercharged motor is close to that, but typical 4.6 and 5.4 engines are not.  I work for Ford now, I have access to those weight numbers.

Yeah, they are pretty damn big!  Lol, no denying that.  But the mod motors use composite valve covers, intake manifold, and hollow camshafts.  They also use aluminum in the front cover and heads.  All that computer aided designing also helps shave weight where it isn't needed. Since emissions, cost, and fuel economy drive all modern car design it is always easier and cheaper to shave weight than try to develop technology to compensate.

Too bad their computer aided design couldn't have made it a bit smaller than a 429 Shotgun Hemi. It's also strapped with very poor flowing heads, even with CNC porting. "Starved for air" is how one major magazine described the motor.  This is my favorite "Mod motor" video>

Ford made a bunch of good motors but the Mod isn't one of them. Lots of Ford guys feel the same exact way.  :grinyes:

Well, I'm not trying to change anybody's opinion on anything car based.  That's like trying to change someones political and religous beliefs, IMO.  Pointless waste of energy.  I just want to make sure other people are given real facts as opposed to unsubstantiated, opinion based claims.

Just realize that every V-8 Ford uses is Mod based, and most all of those vehicles are some of the most popular and best selling vehicles.  And dead reliable to boot, taxi and police fleets were going nuts when they dropped the Vic. The dislike crowd is likely the minority.

Since this has for whatever reason completely strayed from topic, I have no further comment unless it is about the_engineers question.  Also, those Mopar weights are factory all iron, so you could shave 100lbs swapping aluminum heads and intakes on any one of those FYI.

That the Mod V-8 engines are a distant #3 behind the LS GM motors and Hemi aren't just this one man's biased opinion. David Vizard (ever heard of him??) holds the same opinion along with most of the objective automotive press. http://www.popularhotrodding.com/tech/0403phr_chrysler_hemi_57_liter_345ci_engine_review/index.html

Here's what Ward's has to say. The Hemi made the "Top 10 engines" list for the 6th time in the last 7 years. The only American V-8 to do that.>.

That's all I have to say about it.  :smokin:
