Steering wheel play
« on: October 25, 2009 - 10:25:47 PM »
I just purchased a '72 Barracuda with power steering.  :bananasmi It has a Grant steering wheel. I know the front end needs rebuilt but There is still a whole lot of play in the wheel, even when the engine is shut off. Is there a bearing or something in the column that I can replace or something to tighten to take it out? I have to put a new ignition lock in anyways and want to take care of this while I have it apart.

MOst likely it is in the coupler with the shoes in incorrectly or wear or the steering box , I doubt it has anything to do with the column

Anybody have a picture-info on how to correctly place the shoes in the coupler. I replaced my box 2 years ago with a new coupler and the shoe kit but there is play in the coupler...the shoe kit isn't much, I should redo it soon. (I thought those couplers just had play in them)

The spring that holds the shoes in place locates with the loop on the spring to one side of the column not under the end of the column , this will locate it correctly  , if you sit the shoe into the coupler you can clearly see that it is too narrow sitting one way in the coupler
