73 340 Question
« on: October 26, 2009 - 10:56:38 AM »
Hi Guys,

I have a 73 340 in my 1971 Challenger.  The engine has already been rebuilt once.  It seized about 8 years ago.

My question is:

Is it worth it to rebuild this engine if there are no cracks in the block or it is better to get a 71 340 block for my restoration.

My target for the engine is a balanced screamer making 450 to 500HP.

Ideally I wanted an aluminum block to save weight, but they are way too pricey.

Any thoughts?

the block can be checked & should be fine , finding another good block can be costly , the other option is to buy the new block from Mopar

"Stuck is just a state of mind"....lol.  It can be rebuilt if things are not too far gone. The only way to know is to take it apart and try it. Just be careful to not damage the crank or rods if you want to re-use them. You cna break the pistons and anything else to get things apart...lol.

So the 73 block is a good foundation?

Anyone know of a good roller lifer/rocker combination that isn't too expensive?

I've budgeted about 6k for the engine rebuild and parts.

Thanks,
Joe
