Any tips for dyeing carpet?
« on: October 28, 2009 - 03:22:46 PM »
My black carpet needs to be dyed.  It's in pretty good shape, but is discolored from the sun.

Any tips on how to go about this, and what type od dye or system to use?

Thx

I have used a dye for clothes on them and they have turned out good.  Can not remember the name of it but it can be wiped on but make sure you clean the carpet really good before you do this.  I hope this helps some.   :2cents:

Did you take the carpet out, or could it be done in the car?

Anyone else?

I took it out of the car so it would dry faster and I could clean it better.   :2thumbs:

I need to dye mine.  It's originally black, but faded out to a maroon color.  I am thinking of mixing up somthing with some trans tint metal acid dyes I use for lacquer.  They are light stable, and mix in alcohol. I guess I need to find out if alcohol melts carpet!

I got a can of spray dye from a local auto detailer that worked really well on my black carpet. I didn't even have to remove the carpet. What is it with the carpets you get nowadays, I don't remember carpet fading like this back in the old days!

Thanks, I saw some by duplicolor over at NAPA.   I might just try that.   Back in the dat dyes were aniline and they were not too light fast.  These days they use different ones like metal acid dyes that don't fade so much.  Red is always the worst it seems.

I once spilled a Rum & coke on a friend's white carpet and it went black. So try that method.  :smilielol:

I just hit he faded spots on the hump and around the shifter with some HD .97$ gloss black. Just fogged it on there. Worked and looks great, as for longevity, we shall see after the summer months

www.detailking.com. Great spray on -  scrub in product. Not a spray can product - real carpet dye.

I redyed the carpet in one of my other cars. The really important thing is that it's super clean. I'd recommend taking it to a car wash with high pressure wands. Spray the carpet down with strong degreaser and spray it all off. It doesn't hurt to hand scrub the carpet with lacquer thinner either, but you only have have to lightly wipe it off really. I used SEM I think when I did mine and I put it in my siphon feed gun. When you finished and it's dry, brush it with a soft bristle brush like a hair brush to get the thread to stop sticking to each other. It gives it a softer look and gets rid of any clumps.

Dude, It's only about 150.00 for carpet. If you can't afford that, SELL IT. :bigshades:

I don't think price is the major issue here.  It's the fit of the aftermarket carpets.

I ended up replacing mine with new ACC carpet (which is supposed to have the best fit).
It fits ok, but not as good as the original carpet.

In my case, the carpet is perfect other than the fading.  Also, it's about 18th on the list of $150 items.  Another thing is when the carpet comes out I am putting in the manual trans hump for a 4 speed and if the seats come out they are getting rebuilt....  So the carpet ends up being a $2000 deal.  :)

That and I can't afford new carpet.  :)
