How do I remove the steering box?
« on: October 31, 2009 - 04:50:04 PM »
I removed the nut that had a cotter pin in it, I gave it a few smacks with the hammer (used the nut to protect the threads), but it would nut come free.
Is that real big nut the one that need to come off?
Any tips about how to do this would be greatly appreciated...,,I am in unchartered waters!
THANKS!

You need a puller.

Hitting it with a hammer can damage the internals. Most auto supply places sell pullers for this.

I was talking about the nut on the box itself, oops.

For the one shown in your photo with the nut off, you need a pickle fork. Auto supply stores have them too. You will want to bolt the box back in before using it.

the fork will destroy the rubber dust seals on tie rods and balljoints.  You can try holding a heavy hammer to one side of the connecting rod...  ???    or whatever its called...     and hit the other side from different angles.
might just pop out... could stay in there as well though.  keep a bit of pressure on it with a piece of pipe or something, while hitting

I despise the pickle fork....I beat on one till it bled, then picked up a loan a tool front end set from Advanced Auto Parts... What worked well for me looks like this.

That is the tool to use, you keep tightening it till it pops right off...seems like nothing is happening as you tighten it up and pop it goes. I use those for tierods too

I'm going to try to find the '' wheel puller '' style tool. I get a little nervous beating on those parts. This things been on the 40 years, I suspect she'll be difficult.....
Does the ''bolt'' part of that tool push on the end of the bolt to drive it out?

THANKS for all the input!!!

Yes it does.

This is all easier with the gear box still bolted to the k-frame.

A good wrap on the side of the part... not the threaded part should usually do it

Make sure the one you buy is a quality unit. I thought I would save a little when I bought one. I thought, it's only got to do one front end. Unfortunately the arms spread apart releasing from the centre link before the joint came apart.

Some auto part stores have free tool rental. You place a deposit down--or buy the used tool--and when you return it you get a refund.

Yes, today there is lots of junk being sold. Glad I got my stuff in the early 90's before this free trade deal got kicked off.

Now of days things are either junk or over priced it seems.

Yeah hitting might work but I don't like it either if you are not planing on replacing a old gear box.

Don't use heat, I did in my 20's and ruined the seal and lost all my power steering oil, duh. I was then tick off and felt it never come off and left the nut off. Just drove with no power steering. Well about two weeks later I go speeding in to a dirt parking lot spinning the car in to a parking space when the pitman arm drop off. Was able to stop since I was stopping it but if it would have drop on the road  :o

I'm one luckly guy looking back at everything I did in my 20's lol.

I got a loaner from Advance Auto, they put $95 on your Credit Card and they give you a whole set of pullers. If you bring it back within 30 days you get FULL CREDIT!
I got mine apart last night, it was real easy, THANKS to you guys and your advice!!!

When I re-install it, is it position sensitive??? I took a picture of it as it came off, but I think it does not matter since the one part rotates in the steering arm?????

  Does it matter???

As long as you leave your steering column together with the steering box you should have no issues.
