sheet metal replacement order
« on: October 31, 2009 - 07:25:56 PM »
:puke: :clueless:My 73 cuda basically needs it all in the back! roof skin .door skins.trunk.full quarters.left frame rail. extensions. My question is what parts to weld in first.does the roof overlap the upper quarter?should I skin the doors while the old quarters are on for body line exactness? I know this is a broad question but any experienced tips would help me .Thanks

i would do the frame rail first.
if your going to do extensions, and trunk pans, invest in a cleco kit.
http://www.lowbucktools.com/clecos.html
this way you can place, and remove panels as you weld, replace them.
whatever body you have left , providing it still is showing body line, will remain.
do the 1/4s next, roof lays on top of the c pillars.
you can skin the doors last.
theres lots of posts on panel replacement here, just use the search function. and im sure im the first of many who will chime in.
look here, its not as in depth as id like it to be, but you will see what i mean about clecos.
hope it helps. and good luck.

I agree, frame rails first. If the quarters are the originals leave the doors on and get the door to 1/4 gap/line set so when you install the new 1/4s they will be placed correctly. After the quarters are on then reskin the doors to match the quarter and rocker gaps/lines.Don`t forget to also have the trunk lid handy for making sure the opening is correct.

:iagree:Definately have your doors on the car to help with quarter alignment.  Also, record dimensions on everthing you can think of, then go back and take more dimensions and then go back and verify your dimensions are correct.  You will be glad you did.

Take pics of everything as well.  If you are like me you think you will remember but then you go to sleep and forget what it looked like.  Not as good as I was a few years ago.
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development
