Limited slip options?
« on: November 01, 2009 - 05:09:16 AM »
Ok,I knew my suregrip was going but after yesterdays racing it is really toast!Besides replacing it with another Auburn cone style what other options do I have and waht are the +`s and -`s compared to what I have? This is a street/strip car and I want something that won`t ill effect handling or drivability(no harsh lockup types). My buddy mentioned a Detriot True trac as one possibility.

I guess it depends on if cost is a factor.  I read an article years ago about machining the face of the cone so it doesn't come in contact with the case.  I think that article also said something about installing some small springs from a 727 inside the sure grip springs for more holding power.

A new unit is probably a good way to go but the cost maybe prohibitive to some people.

I thought about machining the cone and may still try that but was also looking at options to just replace it if need be.

A used trak lok might be worthwhile since you could rebuild it (clutches) if you can find one for cheap.

Is the true trac the torsen style diff? I can't keep all the names straight anymore.

I don't have links, but two items I've read about the True-Trac Torsen type differentials; yu have to switch to the green type axle bearing.  That and there was supposed to be an article in one of the Mopar mags about retaining the original taper bearings when switching to a True-Trac.  I know I don't have the issue and haven't had time to dig it up.  Just FYI, the search may be worth it to you.

I would convert it to a Dana 60 powerlock using the Ford 3/4 ton truck rear end off a late 60s early 70s truck. You can now buy the ends to use a sealed double taper roller bearing instead of using stock ends with green bearings. That should be able to take whatever you can give it. CP knows where those ends are available. Most expensive part are the new axles you have to buy.

I`m not going to the expense and trouble of swapping axles etc. and not going to the green bearings either,I`ll keep the tapered bearings for a street car.

Yep.. Tru Trac you need the Green bearings. I use them on 150mph road course cars. No issues with them in 10K miles of what I would call super aggressive driving and many other mixed use cars on street and drag.
