Is this valve for A/C only?
« on: November 01, 2009 - 10:17:48 AM »
I am about to swap motors, When I go from the 318 with A/C to the 340, I will remove the A/C.
The cable on the top of this valve is hooked to my heater control in the dash. It would allow me to control the heater temperature. I'm pretty sure that's a after market valve. I was told that the valve is for A/C only and that I will not need it after I go to my new motor WITHOUT A/C............
Can you guys help me with this?  If that valve goes away, how do I control the heat?

THANKS!!!

That looks stock for 73/74 to me.

I would just keep it. Its not hooked to our AC so just leave it there. I think it should be attached with phillips screws though.  :swaying:

Mine is a 70, those red hoses sure don't look like OEM stuff.

I've got a 70 that originally had AC. Only one of my heater hoses runs thru a manual valve like that. Your's is for both hoses.   :clueless:  I'm not saying mine is correct either.   :grinno:

As I take a closer look at this, I'd say the valve is doing nothing on the bottom hose, it controls flow on the top hose only.......

You'll need to keep the valve. Non A/C cars have a door inside the heater box to control the temp. Yours does not. That's a typical aftermarket valve, but nobody bothered to remove the factory valve's bracket. (It's under your valve.)

Could I say "valve" seventeen or eighteen more times?  :blah:

I think the original AC cars used a different valve, like below. Was more elaborate (and expensive) than the one shown. I thought non-AC cars used those.

72' Cuda restomod
70 Mustang Mach 1
07' Toyota Tacoma Prerunner Dbl cab in Speedway Blue!
01' Honda 1100 Shadow Sabre

Wally, I cannot remember where I saw it but someone sells those mixer valves new for AC cars. My son has one on his AC Charger and the bakelite housing is cracked so leaks so he needs one as well.

Non A/C cars shouldn't have a valve in the engine bay. The only place I have found the old style water valve for the A/C cars is ebay. Keep your old bracket though, most of the brackets that come with the NOS ones are for a different car.

One of mine cracked around one of the screw holes too so I had to put a newer style on like in the picture above.  I got it at autozone for a newer challenger.

So Glenster
As long as you are keeping the A/C box under the dash, you have to keep the valve inder the hood. You're just removing the compressor and A/C lines and parts.

Make sure to save everything because one day you'll be putting it all back on.  (I added air to my non-air R/T)
