How long did the carbs sit before being installed to run?
Around a year.

looking at the pictures , i think they are either missing the mixture screws, or backed way out. This would cause you to adjust the idle screw on the center carb way up and idle high, and also run like crap.  those soft plugs pop right out pretty easy.

If those carbs are 30+ years old and have never had those plugs removed so the mixture screws and passages could be cleaned, there could be all kinds of crud built up.   :2cents:

The screws are definately there.  I can see the pointed tips sticking through to the inside.  What's the best way to pop out those plugs?

Try using a sharp pick and pop them out from the edge of them  :2thumbs:  On some of them that had the steel plugs you had to use a hack saw and cut on the corners of the carb to get them out.
But the soft plugs are much easier to get out.

I drill a small hole from the bottom of the base plate on an angle towards the plugs to remove them

That will work as well if they are hard to remove. The dint in the bottom of the plate is the bottom of the hole for the adjuster so go a littlebefore that to drill your hole.   :2thumbs:

Is this the area to drill?

With original plugs in place, like mine are, does this mean the screws are completely closing the passage or were they set up to allow some flow?

generally the screws are adjusted 1/2 -3/4 of a turn back from the closed off position

When all 3 are on, I can't get the engine to idle below about 1,900 with idle screw backed out and it runs rough.  When I rev the engine it continues to be rough.  Can't tell if it's lean or rich.  When I swap out the outboards with the plates it make a huge difference.

When I bought the car 7 years ago it came with all original carbs but only the center was on the car.  Evidently he had issues with the outboards also.  My brother rebuilt the carbs during the restoration so I was expecting the problem to be gone.

The linkage for the outboards could just be adjusted wrong and is holding the butterflys open a little bit. That would cause the fast idle.

I have them disconnected.  Good thought, though.

I've attached 2 pictures of the throttle plates in these carbs.  Plates are in the fully closed position, yet they are not closing air off completely.  How well should the fit be here when they're shut?  Could this be the problem I'm having?
