There is the right way and the wrong way.  Most cars have it the wrong way, they just disconnect the battery positive from the rest of the vehicle.  The problem with this is that if the engine running and the car has an alternator, the alternator with keep charging even without a battery.  So as a safety cut off, it does not work.

You need a double pole switch to break the current from the alternator also or run the wire from the alternator directly to the battery.

it depends what you wantr the switch for , for racing it has to interupt the alternator as posted above but if it is just a battery disconnect when the car is parked you can use one of the threaded kill switches right at the battery

Mine is on the positive side. It is not wrong either. The alternator output goes directly to the battery using a 6ga wire (and breaker). The switch cuts off all electrical flow to the rest of the vehicle when tripped. Whatever the alt has left kicking out just goes to the battery. Nowhere else.

do you have the battery located in the trunk ?
this would be where I would start , then you need a relay & a single wire to cut off the power to the alt field
