Upper Seat Belt Location
« on: November 11, 2009 - 07:15:22 AM »
Just been told that I have to install a lap/sash belt instead of my retractable lap belts so I can register my Challenger in Australia.   :banghead:
I haven't checked yet but where on an early '70 would the upper location be, in the roof or on the rear side panel? The car is in storage at the moment.
Were the reinforced nuts installed into these panels at manufacture or will I have to make my own?
  Thanks in advance.
Dave

There is a threaded hole on the roof just behind the front seat. You should be able to feel the hole through the headliner.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-Dodge-Challenger-R-T-440_W0QQitemZ110455802161QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item19b7adc931
this ebay auction has a pic at the bottom of a top belt...as does this one       http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-DODGE-CALLENGER-R-T-HEMI-CLONE-2FAST-2FURIOUS-CAR_W0QQitemZ290367023785QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash=item439b392aa9

Dave, if you give me your email address I will send you an email that has pictures of where the top hole is. What I did was feel with my thumb then poked a sharpened steel wire through to 'feel' for the threads. No extra holes in the upholstery this way.

Dave ... how did you go about this?

Will be in the same situation soon enough, and would love to get some ideas on how you (or any other Aussies) tackled an ADR compliant lap/sash belt install. I've done a search, but most, if not all the pics are no longer available.

Thanks for the info and pic's, I didn't want to mount it from the roof unless I have to, I am trying to negotiate with my engineer who has to sign off on it.
I am going to try and mount a retractable belt from the lower panel behind the front door so the belt is not in the way of rear seat passengers when they get in & out plus the belt mounted from the roof would flap around and drive me crazy.
Thanks RUSTY Cuda for those pic's.   :2thumbs:

:swaying:there should be 2 hooks mounted over the door window in the roof, that the belt presses up behind when not in use to keep it from flapping around.i only use the lap belt,so far anyway, and the hooks kepp the shoulder belt tucked away nicely.sorry no pics

Thanks Barry for that pic, the belt does fit neatly up there. My problem is when belt is in use and driving along the belt flaps around neck & shoulders and it has annoyed me in other cars fitted that way. I wanted to keep my original retractable lap belts but Australian rules make us fit lap/sash.

Maybe go with the 74 set up, that has em mounted in the guarter inner panels, not sure how they get over your shoulder, been 30 years or so since I used em, if you need I can check it out in my 74 & shoot some pics. Rich.

RUSTY Cuda that is basically where I intend to mount them, any pictures would be appreciated, the more I can show the engineer the more likely he will allow me to do it my way.

I'll try & shoot some pics tomorrow, if the rain stops I'm gonna work on the 73 a bit, I'll check out the belts for you then. Rich.

K, this may be worse, 2 units on the floor & still using that bolt up at the roof, excuse the condition of the car, but it's my next project so still quite a mess!  :-[

I think I like nqkjw's idea over on MoparMartket.

You have to put a hole in your trims, but it's a lot cleaner look, and out of the way.
