904 trans rebuild- what should I do?
« on: November 14, 2009 - 12:31:40 AM »
I am pulling a 273/904 from my Dart. I'm going back with a stock 318 I have, but would like to go through the tranny while it is out. It has 100K+ miles on it. What should I do to the tranny? Would I do anything different to it if someday it might have a stout 360 in front of it?

If you are going to put a 360 in it later, I would find a 727 to rebuild and shorten/balance the driveshaft now.

I had a 360/904 in my drag car (82 Cordoba) It was a decent combo and the trans worked great.  I rebuilt the 904 with a TransGo TF-2 kit.  That kit made a ton of line pressure so you had to be careful while in reverse so you wouldn't bend the apply lever but I never had a problem with it.  As long as you aren't trying to build a 10 second car, I think the 904 will be fine as long as you go through it.

I dont know what to say I never had much luck with the 904 trans.  I always switched to the 727.  You might be alright with it till you can find a 727 though.   :2cents:
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development
