What makes the reverse lights come on?
« on: November 14, 2009 - 11:08:43 AM »
Hi Gang!
I have a 70 Challenger that was a column shift . I am now in the middle of the floor shift conversion ( SLAP STICK). I have all the linkage to make the shifter work, but I don't have the "lockout" linkage that attaches to the steering column arm.( under the hood , close to firewall)
Do I need that linkage for the reverse lights to work or is it in the neutral safety switch on the tranny?
Thanks Brad

There is a switch in the trans for the reverse light, though without the lockout, you may have to turn the column to get your key out sometimes.

I converted my car from a column shift as well and never bothered with the 'lock-out' linkage. IMO it's best left out anyway. I've never had a problem removing my key... :dunno:

Mine is a 70 and came with a 4 speed.  The guy I bought it from took out the lock out linkage and  for me at least, if the cover around the base of the column would get turned, the key would not come out.  No big deal, just twist it and Bob's your Uncle!

THANKS GUYS!
Next question, When I go to put on the linkage from the tranny arm to the shifter      ( under the car) The neutral switch is in the way. I know there is 2 switches one long one short. The one that is in there now measuring just the hex part is about 3/4" long. Is this the long one? If it is can I just switch to the shorter one?

I didn't know there were two sizes of nss switches! Learn something here every day! Mine measures about 3/4" as well but I can't tell you if it's the long or short one. I can tell you that it didn't interfere with linkage, it was close though. Is it possible the bracket that locates the bottom of the rod that passes through the floor (bolted to the tranny case) is a little bent?

I "think" I found the problem the shifter arm on the tranny (727) might not be correct for a slap stick set up. Would you know? :dunno: I think it's not long enough and it needs to drop down some?

I'm on a midnight shift at the moment, but when I get home tomorrow I'll take a pic of the lever on my tranny. The tranny isn't in the car so I shouldn't have too much trouble getting a clear pic. :picture:
