3rd gear slipping in 904
« on: November 16, 2009 - 10:21:10 AM »
Two years ago I had my 904 tranny reworked internally because of the original clutch packs giving out. When it was done I had the shop install a mild shift kit and gearvendors under/overdrive unit. Since then I have been using the car as my DD during the summer and raced it one night every week. About two months ago I noticed third gear was starting to slip and it slowly has gotten worse. I have a very basic knowledge of transmissions and am not able to figure out why this has happened. Wondering if anyone would have an idea why.

Was told once 3rd gear slips the trans needs to be rebuilt. I know, 2 years isn't long, those 904 trans need to be beef up to live behind a good running V8 motor.

:iagree:

How often did you change your trans fluid? Did you have external cooler or oil temp gauge?

Just learning here, how does one do that? :dunno: :clueless: Is that the kickdown adjustment?

No its not the kickdown adjustment--that is a band adjustment. The throttle pressure is control by the throttle-duh, in stock form its rod from the carb to the trans. It can be adjusted by bending the rod or by the trans.

It sounds like you should take the car to a shop but sadly not all shops are fair and honest.

You could try to give it some more throttle pressure. I can't post any pictures cause I went to a manual valve body and could throw the rod away.

You want to watch the rod move as you open the throttle and then adjust it so it doesn't come back in all the way when the throttle is closed and moves deeper in...there is a limit since too much will not allow the throttle to open fully. But if you can open the throttle all the way and still can move the rod deeper in, then its set wrong. What you like is the rod all the way in at full throttle. When the trans is slipping from age you might want it all the way in at  80 to 90% full throttle

Kick down adjustment is the throttle pressure adjustment. Kick down BAND adjustment is a band adjustment. I don't call it a kick down band any way because it is the second gear band not a band used just for kick down.

Sounds to me that there is too much clearance in the cluch pack,  Wear will do that  and if it was built loose to start with then that is what is wrong. :2cents:
Got a pretty good start on my M46 optioned Barracuda restoration but now it is on hold till I can gather more funds.  Still need a few parts for it.  SIU Graduate 75 AAS Automotive Tech, 94 BS Advanced Tech Studies, 1997 MSED Workforce Education and Development

I bet it is slipping in reverse too. Signs of the piston seals in the direct clutch dried and cracked. You'll see the clutch lining gone and the steels blue, when you pull it apart.
After rebuilding it you might want to put in an extra cooler to extend it's life.

Even though it starts off saying 727 rebuild, I find out shortly that it's a 904.  I have most of the pictures saved on my HD if you need reference to any of them.....looks like most got deleted by accident.
