Towing a car with 727 tranny, what will be broken?
« on: November 17, 2009 - 11:12:39 AM »
What will break from a 727 BB transmission if the car is being towed rear wheels on the ground and NOT removing the driveshaft? :working:

I know that should not be done under any circumstances, but it looks like the towing company did not care about this rule because of towing just an old car...

Yes, the old car in this case is a '70 Challenger

Well how for will it be towed.   That trans does not lubricate when towed.  A short distance should not hurt it.  Clutches will burn up if towed too for or more.   :2cents:

I'm not sure how long distance it was towed, but no doubt it was many many miles. A low mileage transmission that used to work properly before the car was towed.

Also the bearings will fail if you tow it too long.

If it runs, leave it idling in neutral. Heard of people towing cross country this way.

It really isn't that hard to pull a driveshaft and wire another yoke to the tranny so it doesn't leak.

What do you have planned to have it towed?

I had my Challenger transported about 700 miles by a trucking company and the last 50 from the terminal to the garage with a small tow truck and then Mr Murphy came on the scene...

Before the transportation the tranny worked absolutely great, but now it's slipping and on the odometer is extra miles....

They killed it. Even the owners manual says not to do it in most automatics. Maybe you can get some satisfaction from their insurance company. They should have used a trailer or roll-back, but not a standard tow truck.

If it is towed with the driveshaft in and the engine not running,it will melt the gear train, seize the output shaft to the governor support, turn all the bushings blue etc. The only thing that might save it is the drain back that Torqueflites are well know for,it could over fill the transmission high enough that the fluid gets up into the gear train and gets slung around and on the parts.
