Park light in sealed beam
« on: November 18, 2009 - 06:04:06 AM »
Hi,
I'm looking to modify the front lights system of my Chally to be compliant with EU regulation  (the parking light has to be "white" and inside the Hi/Low beam lamp).   So, I would like to make a little hole on the rear of my "sealed" outer beams and insert a little parking lamp.  Do you think there are some drawback about opening a "sealed" beam ?

thanks for your help.

I believe that once the seal is compromised & oxygen gets in the filament will burn out quickly.
A Halogen conversion lamp would allow this modification... Here is a low cost example

:iagree: Virtually instantaneously
Are you sure you have to do this with old/classic/antique cars? On this side of the pond the car only has to meet the regulations as they were when the car was manufactured. Do people have to continually update their collector cars to comply with new laws in the EU?

thanks for your reply.  filament burning was exactly my main concern.  So, I need to get a conversion lamp as suggested...

The EU regulation is the same only for brand new cars. Not the same regulation for oldtimer vehicles.  In Germany, for example, you can go with red turn signals in the tail.   In Italy you can register a classic car keeping all original equipments and features except for the lighting system.  All cars shall be equipped with white parking light, HI/LOW beam on the front, yellow  turn signal on the sides (not parking light) and yellow turn signals on the tail..

As simple as complicated to be compliant for a '70 Mopar....

Whatever you do you will compromise the reflective chrome backing in the back of the light assembly. If you drill it or heat it this will most likely happen. There must be a light system available in Europe as there are lots of older cars there and they have to comply as well. Failing that get a friend in Germany or other less stringent country and use their address and register it there.
The only other fix is to place hi/low beams in all 4 lights (you do have a Challenger right!) and use the high on the outside with the low beam as park light. You could get highly technical here and get a 12V - 8V DCin DCout power supply to dim the low beam for park. The inner lights can be low beam / inner & outer as high beam. Would that pass? Otherwise get a mechanic drunk and take a compromising picture of him and get him to sign it off as it is.
