Trunk paint..cleaning up a mess.
« on: November 18, 2009 - 04:45:39 PM »
When the shop that I bought my car from painted the trunk, they used some grey splatter paint stuff....aside from being "not right" for the car, when it gets wet it seems like it gets slimy and wants to rub off....now, i havent tried to rub it off..just seems like it wants to a bit.  i didnt want to mess with it til now.

I would like to get rid of the grey and paint the trunk body color (spray bomb probably) , first installing a (new) spare tire mount.....

Any ideas as far as how I can remove, stabilize or otherwise get rid of the grey splatter paint? It has some texture to it obviously.  Blech.  :puke:  I would rather not just paint over it...but man, there is a lot of area in the trunk and nooks and crannies...

Any ideas?

If you have an angle grinder get a wire cup brush & go to town.. If not a drill & a stiff wire wheel will do it, just not as easy...Wear eye protection.

Sounds like a real joy....and DUSTY.  My garage is integral to the house....the wife will kill me if I fill the place with crud....LOL

Hmmmm....maybe this is a job i should wait til spring for...

But I ordered the spare tire mount already and I figured I will have to drop the tank to put it in...so winter would be a good time to do it.....

They sprayed the stuff on the entire inside of the trunk.....man this will be fun...... :22yikes:

Rattle can paint can normally be removed with rags soaked in laquer thinner.

May be worth a try....it was a body shop that did the spatter paint so they probably used a real gun....

Many of the trunk splatter paints are actually water based.  I would try a few solvents starting with "odorless" mineral spirits and moving up to lacquer thinner or acetone if necessary.  If you try to paint over it, I think you would end up with an even bigger mess.

A spot blaster with recovery system will make it a little easier, still going to be a pain in the butt.

I had some issues......leaky back window...leaky tail-lights...missing weatherstrip, etc....actually still missing the two body plugs on the back panel.....looked all over for those at the hardware store etc....found nothing.... and ended up buying them for $2 each (ouch) from Roseville.

Two dinky pieces of plastic ...sheesh.

But they are on their way.....

Anyways, I am pretty sure that I am just about leak free.....the next step is to put that mount in and then repaint....

Well, I have the trunk floor pretty much striped to bare metal.

WHat remains is the wheel tubs and the section right behind teh rear seat, as well as the inners of the rear fenders and the vent tube on the right.

Used a wire cup and drill, as well as razor blades to scrape.  Wasnt TOO horrible.

Problem is, not sure I can get what is left off without major hassle.

I may try a test spot and spray over top the splatter paint and see what it does.....

That said, what would be good for wiping down the bare metal and the splatter painted stuff to clean it up prior to paint?

Cannot use the spray panel cleaner I have as it requires being rinsed by water....cant happen here.

I think that I will need to clear coat what is left of the splatter paint first.....my guess, by reading stuff on the wed, is that they shot my trynk with spray can splatter paint after all since when it gets wet it dissolves.  APparantly the spray can stuff can/must be clear coated to protect it.

So I guess any clear coat will work.

Then, once that is done, go back and primer everything, then spray the body color on it?

Or maybe just priming it with regualr primer will be enough of a sealer?
