Beware of Foam Frames....
« on: November 21, 2009 - 11:15:23 AM »
This could happen to any of us.... altho this is a bowtie story...

A buddy of mine goes to check out a 64 SS Impala. Small block stroker w a 4sp ect ect. He was sent allot of pics, but he felt the owner of the car was a bit to eager to make the sale. The car looked great in the pics, good detailing under the hood and inside.

He hooks up his trailer and does the 100 plus mile ride to check out the car. Everythings "looking" pretty good. Motor sounds great, time for a test drive. The car runs well, the owner of the car tells my buddy to get on it. You needn't ask twice....... he gives the bowtie a bag full and is going thru the gears coming up the body shifts... he backs out of it... the whole body comes forward... and.................. snaps the new bullet dist right off!!!

Spots of the frame were foamed..shaved...... and painted to look stock!
True story......
BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two things....

Any pics!!
And not to sound silly but do you mean by "foamed" that he used an expandable foam for sealing cracks ( not auto frames though ) to "build" the rotten sections?

Scary, not too surprised... a lot of hacks out there!

8 mounting points and 2 core support mounts ,the core support and c channel over the rear end wont let the body move forward ,not to mention steering shaft and shift linkage and lets not forget the bumpers wont let the body move . my point is this is a fish story .thanks for the laugh.GB

Being familiar with 45 year old cars in the road salted rust belt makes me much less skeptical.

Maybe he thought the foam would make for a smoother ride?  :icon16:
I`m sure there are potential lawsuits from selling a car like that never mind possible criminal charges.

When I bought my first Challenger in the 80's the seller did that to me!. First that foam, then roofing tar to smooth it all then rubber undercoating! It looked like a  frame rail but it wasn't long till the springs almost came through the trunk and the front wheels cambered in really bad! I wanted and saved for that car since I was 9 years old bought it at 19 and it was scrapped 11 months later! 19 and dumb! Good lesson though!
Put me off uni-body cars until my current Challenger! I swore I would never buy another uni-body car, but the pull was too strong!

I can attest this sort of stupidity exists. My buddy Kevin and I drove an early 70’s MGB he wanted to buy. On an MGB the rockers are like a box in a box and rot out. When we drove the car it was mushy and was really weird from the flex. The guy filled the rockers with foam and skimmed over with Bondo. You could see the Bondo cracking.

We looked at a Triumph TR-3 once that another guy said he “Preserved”. He skim coated the entire car with Bondo. He used an air board and long board so it was wave free. Every panel was flat except that all the panels were about a ¼” thicker. What a mess with recessed locks and mods he made. The car sat really low because of the added weight. I think some Shrooms and other pharmacology products where digested by this guy.

If that is a true story, than that is absolutely insane. I can't believe people do this kind of thing. A guy I used to work with had a friend who bought a dodge pickup out in Arizona. He drove it back to Fort Worth with the brakes feeling awkward. When he got it home he tore the brake system apart. Turns out the front calipers were gone on one side, and he had capped off the brake line going to the side. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to mess around with cars.
