If you're going to spend that kind of money on a crate engine, you might as well get a Hemi.

What if you want to actually turn? Having a 700lb motor or a 400lb motor up front will make a big difference. I'm not looking for 700hp. 500hp is enough and the SB 440 does that. I'm not building a drag race car. I want to actually drive my cuda and enjoy the ride. Hemis are sweet but if you want to build one light enough you are spending 30K. Also with a good local engine builder you can probably build it much cheaper. The block is $2800 I cant see the rest of the parts equaling $12K

:iagree: For those who like engine math, the pistons for the 440 are based on a +.030 SB Chevy 400 (4.155).  If you get a set for the 5.7 rod, you'll be within 0.050 of an uncut SB Mopar deck.  I wish there was a cheaper way to get to that bore size.  If so, it'd be very cheap/easy to build one of these.

Can a block be sleeved to allow this?

From Engine Masters fall issue;

P5153478 siamese bore small block capable of 4.180 bore with 4 bolt mains and thicker main web, bore, and deck. Contains 4340 forged steel crank with forged rods and pistons. Super Commando, as cast head using offset intake rockers and 2.05 and 1.60 valves. No info on flow provided. Cam specs out at 251/257 @ 050 with 6.01 lift. Comp ratio is 10.2:1. Using the M1 single plane and a 1050 Quick Fuel carb, they tested it to 520 horse at 5700 and 554 lb ft torque at 4200. They feel power was down due to the 1.75 headers they had to use and think that 1.875  would have opened the results up more.

Not outlined in the article, but taking my own stab at it, I'd say with some decent port work and a jump in compression, a 700 horse small block would be easily possible. Or drop the compression and put some artificial squeeze on it and you could realistically be at 1200+. All that at a sub 500# weight break. Only poopy thing about it is the price, but hey, you could always piece it together your self and save some bucks in the process. But, if you wanna play....

My 'Cuda had a 408 which was great.  However, I'm going 400/451 or 400/470 stroker in my '68 Valiant.  It's got many advantages over a SB especially if you want over 500hp IMHO.  To start with I think the big block is a better designed engine plus its still light.  I'm not knocking SBs :)

I be running 4,10 bor in  a 340 la block for years with a F1 procharger
with out any problems 
..now i have stroke it to 422, lets se what happen.... :poopoke:

In the Engine Masters issue they don't talk about how this engines block is a NEW R-3 Siamese bore with 48° tappet (improved valve train geometry) apposed to the stock 340/360 59° tappet. This engine is built, balanced & dyno'd by Stanton Racing, not the old crappy mopar crate engine. You could piece an 440 stroker together but remeber this one uses a new block which set you back over $3000 alone.

I have been looking alot for a new small block for my cuda for awhile. Like some of the other members here, I am looking for a powerful small block so my car can handle well. If I had the money I would just order a world aluminum hemi, but I would rather save $10,000 for other goodies :thumbsup:

This small block is on the top of the list so far. :droolingbounce:

There's a stroker kit out there that will take a 318 to 440, it was some company of of California. I can't remember their name, but they had 3 or 4 kits for 318's....

Just got the latest issue of PHR, with the Jegs Engine Master's Challenge in it. The only mopar to make it to the finals was a 365 inch 1st gen Hemi with a pack of weber carbs. Next up in 15th was a small block. 2nd gen Hemis and big wedges didn't score high enough to make the top 20.

They don't get in to a lot of specific details about the build and tricks employed, but here is what they had;

Well i just got off the phone with Stanton racing and they told me that the 440 super commando is built with all ARP nuts and bolts. The heads on the block are a new aluminum version of the 1970 TA challenger & AAR cuda heads. They are bought "as cast" meaning it is up to the builder to port and polish as they desire, they will not work right out of the box.. I do remember the article in engine masters saying that there is a lot more room for porting and polishing the heads that came on the crate engine. After doing some more research and pricing out having this engine built I decided to just go ahead and bite the bullet......I ordered one  :bananasmi. I know its a lot of money for a small block but once you start adding up the the parts they use to build this engine at ain't all that bad. I didn't pay the retail price it was just over $12,499 with shipping.

Now I am going to be on here asking a ton of ?'s for what to upgrade next, radiator, fuel sending unit with a return line, motor mounts and so on.... :1zhelp:

I don't think that is possible.  Even on a 4" bore, the stroke would have to be 4.375" which would not fit between the pan rails.

However, here is a 402 build based on a 318.

That is going to be one screamer of an engine. I wanna ride.  :) I would be interested in finding out how it behaves on the street. Congrats.
