Bigger cam, headers, aftermarket intake, bigger carb. Getting the heads ported would help too. That would all be less than 3K.    :2cents:

I was thinkng of a little bigger cam....mybe a Voodoo. So ported X heads w/some 2.02 valves? I was thinking of just slapping some Eddy RPM's on.....I have a holley six barrel already on and will be using TTI headers....

If you already have the 6bl set up and have TTI headers here is what I would recommend:

Alum heads, ported with roller rockers

Roller Cam

Windage Tray

That would prob get your 3k spent.

Good info, I wonder what the gain would be if you did all the mods with the exception of the headers?  Maybe only 20-25 down, still have 370?

I've never seen a header that lasts longer than 3-5yrs.  Can't bear to pay $500-$800 for that.

Cam, Intake, Heads & exhaust is where the power is made , Porblem is there is no real value priced small block heads that result in big power gains unlike the big blocks , W2 or W5 will make excellent power but you will spend more then you budget on them .
I have made more power with ported 308 head castings than the equialent X or J casting so I would recommend them & the VooDoo cam choice is excellent , use an RPM Air gap intake & a Proform 700 carb

Would I be better off and happier with immediate HP gains putting the $ in a forged stroker kit and porting the current heads? I would hate to dump a bunch of money in aluminum heads and make big HP with a weak crank and rods. If so can you reccomend a good forged stroker kit 408-416....

What is the rest of the car built up to? Sometimes more power is something that should come after gears and a shift kit. What dont you like about the car now?

That's not much life for a set of headers.  The headers on my car have been on since 1975.

Doesn't the stock 340's already have a windage tray from the  factory?

Those power making goodies will only go as far as the stock rods can handle. :2cents:

we did a 340 where i work that used the edlebock heads with a solid flat tapett comp cams camshaft, and 030 over pistons for 10:1 compression on pump gas.
the new edlebrock heads had a pocket port that i did working there, and the boss had me mill the heads slightly. he always gets me to take apart new heads anyways to check guides, springs, redo seats, etc.
it also had a single plain intake and holley 750 carb.
wow
it made 432hp at 5700 rpm on the dyno !

seems like a pretty good combo for basically a stock 340 with bolt ons like heads and a cam and intake !

how come guys dont just go get the edlebrock heads, get them checked and milled slightly, then change cam and intake ?

i think a guy could do the edelbrock heads, xtq comp cam, intake and carb for under the 3k, and probably get very close to that engine done where i work ?

I guess my issue with the Eddy heads was that we pulled out about 6 heads & they all had major core shift , possibly they send all the junk to Canaduh though
