Can anyone recommend a good wireless router?
« on: November 23, 2009 - 11:36:02 PM »
Can anyone suggest a good wireless router?  My wife just got me a lap top computer for Christmas and I would like to have a wireless router so I do not have to keep unplugging the ethernet cable from this computer so I can use my lap top.  I know there are different ones out there but since I have zero knowlege of computer stuff, I figured I'd get a better response by throwing it out on here as to what I should look for.

Thanks.  :2thumbs:

I've got a Linksys Wireless G that I like.  What wireless is your laptop set up for (G, etc)?

On the box (if you still have it) or website if not.  I'm sure it's probably listed in your Control Panel under Wireless Devices or something, but that seems like a lot of thinking for this time of night.

Make sure you have a good firewall if going wireless, otherwise others will be able to use your account.   :stomp:   :villagers:

Box shows 802.11b/g WLAN .   Is that it?

I've always gone with either US Robotics or Netgear.  I tried to set up my father's Linksys and the setup software was so convoluted he had to get the Geek Squad in to do it.  The others I have used were literally plug and play.  That was about 5 years ago, though, so they might be better now.

I got myself a motorola surfboard. Just set up a password to prevent others from hacking in to your connection.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Just make sure you change your admin password.  Otherwise, anyone who can see your network can browse to 192.168.1.1 leave the username blank, type "admin" for a passord and be "in".

I have Linksys, but mine is a higher end gaming router. If you don't play a lot of online games then a cheaper one will be fine. On the security, go with the best one that the router has, and make up a complicated password for it. I use the capital letters from phrases, and switch up with capital letters, numbers and symbols. An example would be "Mopar E bodies are the greatest cars ever", but use "MeBaTgCe$2008" or something along those lines. Those type passwords are pretty impossible to hack.
