Front bucket seat differences??70-73
« on: November 26, 2009 - 04:35:09 PM »
Hey guys,

I was hoping you could help me determine something before I make a buy. I need front seats for my 70. I am working with a guy who has a set from a 73. They look like the same shape and all but no plastic seat back. My question is can these be made to look just like a set from a 70 without too much work. Is it just seat covers or are the foams and everything else different too? I really need them and want to buy them if they will work out ok. I am more concerned with what they look like from the front. My car will be a driver so if the only thing different were the plastic seat backs once I change the covers I would be ok with that. Less things to buy really. Thanks in advance.

Even the inserts are different design. You should just hold back and get the correct year and fit. These could physicaly fit, but thats it.

Thanks for the reply sir. I am trying to hold out for the correct seats but so far they are either way too expensive or they won't ship. I have found six sets from a seventy that the seller won't ship. I was kind of thinking of going with these until I can find a better replacement. There is a guy on ebay with a set that will ship but I fear they will be bid up to an astonomical price before the auction ends. I am keeping on the lookout though.

Now by inserts do you mean the center section of the seat covers with the ribs? I noticed they seem deeper on the 73 seats on the seat back. That is what made me question if the foam was different. There is only so much a seat cover can hide.

Foam is integral (molded into) to the seat frame on a '73.

Hold out for the right year for sure.

You can use 1970 A or B-body bucket seat frames if you change out the foam & have the E-Body seat tracks.

Thanks Barry. That is some good info. Shows the guy selling the 73 seats is not right. He said they only needed covers to make them like 70 seats. Didn't seem right looking at the pics which brought me here to the pro's. I am going to follow the suggestions and wait for some 70 buckets to work with. One of these days I will find a set that I can get to Alaska. I hope.

The other thing you may need if you get a set from a different model are the listing wires.

The wires sold at hardware stores for suspending drop ceilings work, you can cut them to the lengths needed.

Barry,

Please forgive my ignorance but what are the listing wires for? I have heard of them before but I am not sure where they go. I planned to do the rebuild on the seats once I get them. At least covers and foams if needed. Stripping of the frames and refinishing. I just don't know the suspension part of the seat if you will. Are the listing wires what holds the bottom seat foam up?

There are cloth sleeves sewn to the bottom of the vinyl for some of the patterns, similar to the bow setup in a headliner. The listing wires pass through those sleeves. They get pulled tight to the seat frame & are secured with hogrings to create the pleated areas.

The seat foam is held up by the seat springs.

I see. They keep the pleat nice and tight. Thanks for the info.

Thanks again guys. I paid more than I wanted but I scored some b-body buckets from a 70. I also just got the console I bought off a guy in PA in the mail today. It is in damn good shape. Sure brought a smile to my face.

My '71 came with seats that I assume to be from '72 or '73.  I was planning to buy new foam and having them recovered in the '71 split pattern this winter.  Will this work?  :clueless:
