AVG Free Edition is great...I only stopped using it because my provider supplies an anti virus program now

Other than it being free the one thing I really liked about it was the option to scan for virus and then shut down the computer when done...have it scan the computer when you are out or going to bed without interrupting your computer time

I said goodbye to Norton and McAfee a few years ago and have not looked back

They also have a pay edition but I never felt the need for it

Thanks, the free avg seems ok to me so I am going to give it a try. If I like it I might upgrade later. Any good free firewalls you guys know about?

As far as a firewall goes...you'd be alright with one from Zone Alarm

Here's the website

http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/home.htm?lid=en-us

I find this version the best of the free ZoneAlarm Firewalls. Version 8 seemed to cause trouble for a lot of people

I've linked you to the actual download page

I use AVG free as well. It does a good job and doesn't bog down your system like Norton does. For clean-up I use Advanced System Care and Ccleaner. Both programs are free and do a good job of cleaning junk and temp files out of your system. I run the once every week or so.

I started using the free one from Microsoft Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ and so far it seems to work fine.

I used to use McAfee because it was free from Comcast, and have also used AVG in the past.

I used to use AVG, but I had a virus get through a couple of seperate times. I switched to Trend Micro and haven't had any problems yet. I ran it as soon as I installed it on the computer and it found a few different spyware cookies that my other programs hadn't. It doesn't slow my computer down at all, and it only cost 40 bucks. It has anti-spyware as well, which AVG doesn't. If you do use AVG you need to get a separate anti-spyware program such as AdAware.

I'm using AVG free 8.5, they have just upgraded to ver. 9 but are having a few teething problems so I am waiting for the fixes.
I had 2 licences for vet anti virus for 15 years but when I upgraded to XP pro a few years back it couldn't find a 4 year old virus which fried my hard drive.   :villagers:
I use Spybot which is also free.
I had issues with zone alarm clashing with the anti virus ( turned it off when booting up ), zone alarm couldn't help even though I paid for it.    :pullinghair:
