Does someone know what I could use as a 'flexible heat shield', something with an adhesive back that would stick to cloth?

Are you looking for something like this?

Aerogel would be the most ideal but it's nearly impossible to get.
You could use any of the 3M trim spray adhesives to attach it I would imagine.

It would probably work perfectly, though I only need about a single square foot of the stuff. Thanks for the link.

Try Vans Aircraft in Portland OR. They sell an adhesive heat shield that protects the kevlar engine cowl from 1200*F exhausts that run within 1" and no problems to date. Van is a dutchman so you can buy as little as you want as it is 1ft wide.
www.vansaircraft.com
and they have an electronic catalog and you give em your Visa number and bingo it happens.
